Finding a job in Canada
New to Canada? Have qualifications or work experience from another country? Read on.
Settling in Canada, in any major city, with degrees and professional qualification from overseas, one may feel that they would have no problem acquiring a job anywhere. Unfortunately, there are rude awakenings and reality checks! There are challenges like lack of Canadian work experience, not at par degrees or diploma recognition and competition with current job seekers. Then one has to pass the language proficiency test and also prove that their work experience is at par with the needs of the employer. All this is time-consuming adding to the frustration of newcomers.
The government has come up with various agencies to help the new immigrant find jobs, careers, address questions and concerns that are common to any new immigrant. Settlement workers are people who help newcomers in understanding the rights and responsibilities and find services they need such as housing, setting up appointments with potential employers, provide information on citizenship and sponsorship, refer newcomers to training programs, doctors, lawyers, transportation and more. There are bridging programs that provide foreign trained individuals to move into the labour markets without duplicating their work. This way trained professionals are assessed and compared to the employers expectation, making it easier for workers to assimilate in their chosen profession. Some programmes offer mentoring opportunities with established professions so that newcomers become certified in their professions.
