Success is often connected with talent, intelligence, and opportunities. However, Cricket legend MS Dhoni believes that there is one other thing that can never truly be replaced. Recently, in Raj Shamani’s podcast, MS Dhoni shared the one value he considers as the absolute essentials for success. His advice goes far beyond the pitch. According to him, this quality stays relevant no matter what profession a person chooses or how much the world changes.

Do you think gentle parenting is realistic in everyday life?

In a generation growing up around shortcuts, his advice is something every parent needs to hear, and teach their children.

The one value MS Dhoni considers irreplaceable

Revealing the values he holds, the cricket legend admitted that despite valuing punctuality, he is not always perfect.“There is no substitute for hard work. My father and grandfather used to say this too, I will also say this. My coming generation will also say this. There is no substitute for hard work,” says MS Dhoni. “People may have different views. The lazy person often finds the best way of doing the job with the least amount of effort. But he also thinks that it is hard work because he is lazy. So hard work is again important,” added the legend,” he adds.
According to Dhoni, people may have different perspectives on hard work. Someone who is naturally lazy may try to find the easiest and quickest way to complete a task while using the least amount of energy. But even that process involves effort in its own way. That is why, Dhoni believes, hard work remains important regardless of how a person approaches a task.

Why this lesson matters so much today

The world today reveals success stories in a different way. Social media often makes achievements look instant and effortless, and thus children get an unrealistic expectation and start believing that success should come quickly, and when that doesn’t happen, they get discouraged easily. This is exactly why MS Dhoni’s advice becomes deeply relevant for parents. Hard work teaches children patience, consistency, and resilience; qualities that help them stay emotionally strong even when things do not go their way.

Why this lesson is more important for parents than children

Some parents often praise results instead of effort. Even though they do so unknowingly, this habit sends the message to the child that what holds values is the result and not what they learn in the journey. On the other hand, when parents themselves understand the value of hard work, they teach their children that success isn’t what’s built overnight. Children who grow up with this mindset are more likely to stay motivated during setbacks because they understand that progress takes time.In many ways, Dhoni’s words are not just advice for children aiming to succeed, but also a reminder for parents to create an environment where effort is respected just as much as achievement.
