Uttarakhand glacier disaster live updates: 26 bodies have been recovered from different places so far, says police

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) today removed the debris and slush at the tunnel near Tapovan dam here in Chamoli district, following the glacier burst which led to heavy flooding in Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers. ITBP, Indian Army, and NDRF forces are also engaged in the retrieval in the affected areas. Stay with TOI for all the latest updates

Glacier breaks off in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, causing flash flood in Dhauli Ganga

A glacier burst in Raini area of Chamoli in Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand on Sunday caused a flash flood endangering the life of people living near the river bank. The flood has reportedly caused damaged to the hydropower plant nearby. Authorities have sounded a high alert from Chamoli to Haridwar. Chief minister Trivendra Rawat is expected to make an aerial survey shortly. The CM has convened an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation and to supervise rescue and relief operations. As per initial reports, the Tapovan- Vishnugad hydropower plant seems to have been compromised amidst a flood of water seen gushing down the Ganga river.
