In Polur, Abishek R of TVK secured an extremely narrow victory, polling 67,961 votes. He defeated DMDK’s Saravanan P by just 227 votes. PMK’s Baskaran CR finished third with 61,444 votes, as the constituency delivered one of the closest contests, ending in a razor-thin TVK win.The Polur constituency witnessed a strategic and high-stakes showdown in the 2026 Assembly elections. The AIADMK-led alliance fielded C R Baskaran (PMK), a move designed to consolidate the significant Vanniyar vote bank in the region. He was challenged by P Saravanan, representing the DMDK as part of the DMK-led alliance, bringing a different organisational strength to the race. The entry of A Umadevi of the NTK and R Abishek of the TVK introduced a vigorous youth-centric and gender-inclusive dynamic, focusing on rural employment and irrigation infrastructure. In the 2021 election, Agri Krishnamurthy S. S. (AIADMK) secured victory with 97,732 votes (48.38% vote share), defeating K. V. Sekaran (DMK), who polled 88,007 votes (43.57% vote share). In the 2016 election, K. V. Sekaran (DMK) had won the seat with 66,588 votes (34.02% vote share), defeating AIADMK’s M. Murugan by 8,273 votes. Voter turnout reached 89.39%, a marked increase from 82.33% in 2021. This rise in participation is largely attributed to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive, which cleansed the electoral rolls and proactively registered a high volume of young, first-time voters and industrial workers across the Polur and Chetpet taluks.
Polur (Assembly constituency No. 66) is a critical general segment in Tiruvannamalai district, serving as a hub for the paddy trade and agro-based industries. Its political landscape is often a barometer for agrarian sentiment and the influence of the Vanniyar community in the northern belt of Tamil Nadu. The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking actor Vijay’s political debut as a third force across all 234 constituencies.
