Omicron especially dangerous for unvaccinated, says WHO

Covid-19 infections continued to surge in the country at a slightly slower rate than last week, with India reporting over 1.94 lakh fresh cases in the last 24 hours, 26,657 more than the previous day. This makes a 15.8% rise today. Deaths from the virus, although still very low overall, are rising at a faster rate with each passing day. Stay with TOI for latest updates:

The ICMR's National Task Force for Covid-19 has decided against including antiviral drug Molnupiravir in the Clinical Management Protocol for Covid-19 as of now, official sources said on Tuesday. The experts of the task force cited safety concerns and argued that Molnupiravir was not of much benefit in Covid treatment to arrive at the decision in a meeting held on Monday.According to the Health Ministry, Molnupiravir is an antiviral drug that inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication by viral mutagenesis. This anti-Covid pill got the Drug Regulator General of India's approval on December 28 for restricted use in emergencies.

Omicron to infect more than half of Europe's population in 6-8 weeks - WHO
More than half of the European population are expected to be infected with the Omicron coronavirus variant within the next six to eight weeks, the World Health Organization's top Europe official said on Tuesday. Europe saw more than 7 million newly reported Covid-19 cases in the first week of 2022, more than doubling over a two-week period, the WHO's Europe director Hans Kluge told a news briefing. "At this rate, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation forecasts that more than 50% of the population in the region will be infected with Omicron in the next 6-8 weeks," Kluge said.
