NEW DELHI: In Assam’s Majuli (Assembly Constituency 98), the verdict was decisive and one-sided, underscoring the BJP’s continued dominance in the state. Bhuban Gam of the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a commanding victory with 78,324 votes, defeating Indraneel Pegu of the Indian National Congress by a massive margin of 35,300 votes.
The scale of the win highlights not just a strong organisational presence but also a consolidation of voter support in what has emerged as a BJP stronghold. Other candidates, including Bhaity Richong of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), remained marginal players, with vote shares in the low thousands, while NOTA too saw limited traction.
There were a total of 144837 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2026 Assembly election in Majuli Assembly constituency, of whom 73545 were male, 71292 female and 0 belonged to the third gender.
Assam voted across all 126 seats on April 9, recording a turnout of over 85%, one of the highest in recent years.
Notably, the surge in voting was seen not just in rural areas but also across urban centres, pointing to broad-based and enthusiastic voter participation across the state.
Majuli is Assam's largest river island and an assembly constituency in Jorhat district, reserved for Scheduled Tribes, celebrated for its unique Vaishnavite Satra culture and vulnerability to erosion from the Brahmaputra River.
Bhuban Gam of BJP is the current MLA, elected in the 2022 by-election after Sarbananda Sonowal resigned for Rajya Sabha. In the 2022 by-election, Bhuban Gam won with 67,242 votes (69.86per cent share), defeating AJP's Chittaranjan Basumatary (25,101 votes, 26.08per cent) by 42,141 votes. Erosion threatens the island's landmass, displacing communities and Satras despite protective measures like geo-bags. Flooding, connectivity via ferries, and preserving indigenous Mishing culture amid tourism growth are priorities. Infrastructure lags, including roads and power, while youth seek non-agricultural jobs.
