In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election for Lalgola (61), Abdul Aziz Doctor of the All India Trinamool Congress secured victory with 67,954 votes, defeating Indian National Congress candidate Touhidur Rahaman Suman, who polled 48,994 votes. TMC won by a margin of 18,960 votes in the constituency. BJP’s Amar Kumar Das finished third with 35,496 votes, followed by CPI(M)’s Babluzzaman Md with 21,932 votes. Other candidates remained far behind, while NOTA recorded 1,044 votes.
Lalgola is constituency number 61 in Murshidabad district, part of the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency. In 2026, TMC has fielded Dr Abdul Aziz against BJP's Amar Kumar Das. The seat is characterised by a high Muslim population and has long been associated with a particular political family.
In 2021, TMC's Mohammad Ali won the seat by a huge margin of approximately 60,707 votes, with the TMC polling over 57 per cent of valid votes. It was a landmark result, as it ended the decades-long dominance of the Abu Hena family in the constituency. In 2016, Abu Hena of the Congress had won the seat, defeating the TMC's Chand Mohammad — illustrating that Lalgola was one of the constituencies in Murshidabad where Congress managed to hold off the TMC tide.
The Hena family — with Abu Hena's father Abdus Sattar also having been a seven-time MLA — had effectively controlled the seat from 1967 until 2021. TMC's emphatic 2021 victory reshaped the political landscape here entirely. Ahead of 2026, Dr Abdul Aziz is a new TMC face in the constituency, and the degree to which the party can consolidate its 2021 gains will be tested as Congress retains residual support in this border district.
