Former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi on Tuesday called exit polls "patently illegal," stating that they are being conducted openly despite the Election Commission's (EC) ban. Speaking at the G.V.G. Krishnamurty Memorial Lecture, Quraishi questioned how exit polls are being held during the "prohibited period," which runs from the start of voting in the first phase until half an hour after the end of polling in the last phase.
He pointed out the contradiction, saying that while exit polls are prohibited during this time, they are still being shown immediately after voting concludes. "This is a clear violation happening before our eyes and the EC’s," Quraishi remarked.
The former CEC referenced a 2009 amendment to Section 126A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which prohibits the conduct, publication, and dissemination of exit poll results during the prohibited period.
