DMK secured a comfortable victory, polling 87,802 votes. He defeated TVK’s K Bharathidhasan by a margin of 13,278 votes. DMK’s MP Giri finished third with 70,346 votes, as the constituency delivered a clear mandate in favour of
AIADMK.
The Chengam constituency witnessed a high-stakes battle in the 2026 Assembly elections, with the DMK fielding M P Giri, who sought to secure a hat-trick of victories. He faced a rigorous challenge from S. Velu of AIADMK, while the entry of K Bharathidhasan of the TVK and J Shoba of the NTK added a fresh dynamic.
In the 2021 election, M P Giri (DMK) secured victory with 108,081 votes (48.73% vote share), defeating M S Nainakannu (AIADMK) by a margin of 11,570 votes. In 2016, M P Giri (DMK) won with 95,939 votes (45.60% vote share), defeating AIADMK’s M Dinagaran by 12,691 votes.
Voter turnout this year reached 89.39%, a notable hike from the 80.66% recorded in 2021. This increase is largely attributed to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive, which improved roll accuracy and encouraged higher participation among rural voters.
Chengam (Assembly constituency No. 62) is a reserved (SC) segment in Tiruvannamalai district.
Its economy is primarily agrarian, and the constituency is a crucial indicator of the political trends within the state’s northern Scheduled Caste communities.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4.
