Basirhat Dakshin election results 2026: Surajit Mitra of TMC wins against Suraj (Shourya) Banerjee of BJP

Surajit Mitra of the All India Trinamool Congress won the Basirhat Dakshin Assembly constituency, defeating Suraj (Shourya) Banerjee of the Bharatiya Janata Party.Basirhat Dakshin is a semi-urban general category constituency in North 24 Parganas and is part of the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat. It includes Basirhat municipality and Taki municipality, with a Muslim population of around 40 per cent and an SC electorate of approximately 17.5 per cent. Voter turnout has remained above 84 per cent in recent cycles. In the 2026 election, the contest was between Surajit Mitra of the TMC and Suraj (Shourya) Banerjee of the BJP.In 2021, TMC's Dr Saptarshi Banerjee won with 1,15,873 votes, defeating BJP's Tarak Nath Ghosh by 24,468 votes. In 2016, TMC's Dipendu Biswas held the seat with 88,085 votes. The constituency has a consistently high turnout and the significant minority vote has been a key factor in TMC's margin. TMC has changed its candidate for 2026, and the new face will need to consolidate the party's diverse coalition of Muslim and SC voters.
