NEW DELHI: Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay of the All India Trinamool Congress won the Ballygunge constituency with 1,08,481 votes, defeating BJP candidate Shatorupa by a margin of 61,476 votes. Shatorupa secured 47,005 votes. CPI(M)'s Afreen Begum finished third with 7,185 votes, followed by Congress's Rohan Mitra with 1,975 votes.
Twelve candidates contested from Ballygunge in West Bengal's 2026 Assembly Election, along with NOTA.
Ballygunge is one of Kolkata's most prestigious assembly constituencies, situated in the Kolkata district under the Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha seat. The constituency encompasses some of south Kolkata's most affluent and culturally significant neighbourhoods, with a cosmopolitan electorate of Bengali Hindus, non-Bengalis, and a smattering of other communities.
In 2021, the Ballygunge seat was won by TMC's Subrata Mukherjee — a veteran politician and senior party leader. However, Mukherjee passed away in November 2021, necessitating a bypoll. In the April 2022 bypoll, TMC fielded former Bollywood singer Babul Supriyo — who had recently crossed over from BJP — and he won with over 70 per cent of the vote, defeating his BJP rival by a wide margin.
In 2016, the late Subrata Mukherjee held the seat for TMC. Ballygunge's voter turnout is typically lower than average, around 61 per cent, reflecting its affluent character.
