Arambag election results 2026: BJP’s Hemanta Bag defeats TMC’s Bag Mita in close contest

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election, Arambag constituency (No. 200) was won by Bag Hemanta of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who secured 1,23,000 votes and defeated TMC candidate Bag Mita by a margin of 28,959 votes. CPI(M)’s Bithika Pandit finished a distant third with 11,414 votes, followed by Congress candidate Sushil Santra with 2,296 votes. Other candidates, including independents and BSP, received minimal support, while NOTA accounted for 1,606 votes.Arambag (constituency no. 200) is a Scheduled Caste-reserved seat in Hooghly district, part of the Arambag Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency has historically been associated with CPI(M) before the post-2011 delimitation. Arambag town serves as the administrative hub for the subdivision and is the largest settlement in this part of the district. The area has a strong agricultural base, and the community is known for seasonal migration for work.In 2021, BJP's Madhusudan Bag won the seat, defeating TMC's Sujata Mondal by a margin of about 7,172 votes, making it one of BJP's notable gains in Hooghly district. In 2016, the seat was held by the TMC. The 2026 contest sees TMC's Mita Bag attempt to reclaim the constituency. Notably, the TMC and BJP candidates share the same surname, which may create ballot confusion in a closely fought seat. Congress has fielded Sushil Kumar Santra for the SC-reserved seat. As a constituency the TMC needs to recapture, Arambag carries considerable strategic weight for the party's efforts to restore its full dominance in Hooghly district.
