Is the era of coalition politics over?

With his spectacular rallies and skilfull media outreach, Narendra Modi succeeded in taking the BJP to its highest-ever Lok Sabha tally of 282. His 'growth and development' plank won back the urban middle class and youth and led the party to an absolute majority, a first by any party in 30 years. After years of mustering numbers with the support of other parties that often left past governments teetering on the edge, is the era of coalition politics finally over?

I'm a witness to the elections in the recently-divided AP also where people have established beyond doubt that they vote for stability. Each vote cast need not necessarily be cast in a holy spirit. There are various factors weighing down Indian Democracy and things may change for the better in the coming 10 years.Until then, there actually is no threat to Indian Democracy.

Only a Strong Stable National Political Party with a Decisive Mandate from the People can work for the Nation without any Coalition Troubles. India needs Presidential Style Elections where People Of India should be able to DIRECT ELECT PRIME MINISTER. Indians want a STRONG Nation and Coalition Government results in a Weak Nation !!!

Coalition governments have been very detrimental for the growth of economy. It destroyed the social fabric of the country.

Coalition governments have stalled our growth for so many years. What we needed was a steadfast government that understands the taxpayers plight and acts without fear.In a coalition government the government can never be expected to make dramatic changes as they might in some way or another hurt the interests of their coalition partners or at least so have we seen. When a Mulayam singh yadav or a Mamta Banerjee breaks out from the government it suffers a severe blow as its strength in the house risks coming to a minority. No government in India has had the courage to drop mass appeasement of politicians. A party with complete majority can overlook such threats

Close to three decades, coalition governments ruled India. They had their own inevitable compulsions. Many a time they led to critical situations, wherein the leading party found the need to compromise on vital issues. The tails were wagging the dogs at times. Mr.Modi-led BJP has put an end to it by securing the requisite majority on its own. A government has to be stable to govern efficiently. The present change is a turning point. People will hereafter prefer only single party governments. A good lesson has been learnt by all.

BJP has proved that nothing is too big for a single party to achieve if it has a decisive policy and a visionary PM candidate like Modi. Coalition compulsions due to dual-power centres only hinder decision-making coupled with a jigsaw of narrow-minded regional parties which fend for their own state in a coalition government, as in Mamata's case with UPA II.

How is one supposed to answer this now? Only if the new government rises up to the occasion and delivers successfully, we could hope for no coalition in future.

Sanjeev Johari, Unknown, 2014-05-17 15:53:02.0
Till the time new Government is able to deliver era of coalition will not come back.

jyoti ranjan mishra, Unknown, 2014-05-17 15:48:56.0
i dont think so....this result is just because people are tired of UPA government and they know this state parties will support with there nos to UPA...due to this all the parties who supported the UPA looses badly and due to no alternative choice BJP wins...this for me is the mix of modis popularity and negative vote.....

No. Not for ever. People are still divided among states and provinces with their own hopes and demands. Regional Parties would remain relevant.

vkguptan, Bangalore, 2014-05-17 15:28:09.0
Regional parties are still strong. Jayalalithaa and Mamata has clearly demonstrated that. Same in Telengana and Andhra. In Telengana it is TRS and in Andhra it is TDP. In Kerala also it is UDF which is a conglomeration of regional outfits like Kerala Congress of different denominations and Muslim League. Though Muslim League might be mistook for an All India Party it is very much a regional one and have nothing to do with Muslims in other states. It has more interest in the personal benefits of its functionaries than in the up-lifting of Muslims. Whatever up lifting happens it is just incidental. Then in Maharashtra the Senas are pure regional outfits. So too the Akali Dal. Only in this election the regional out fits apart from TMC and AIADMK helped Congress or BJP so their existence did not stand out. The Modi wave steam rolled everything on its way which stood up and so it looked that it is back to two party system. In the next election it need not be so. It is sure that Modi has no magic wand that he can transform India into a heaven with milk and honey flowing. Five years will not be sufficient to clear the much created by Congress. And the people are impatient and if they do not see a change in matter of days they will loose their faith and jump back to dynasty. They have a very poor memory.

NO! The ERA of coalition could come back anytime when a leader with potential is not available on the national scene! Even during the general Election 2009, if there was one promising leader from either side of the spectrum, we would have seen the end of the coalition era. Available people were fighting among each other. The moment, we could see one leader, public voted for him... This goes to emphasis that general elections are fought NOT ONLY on the party lines but also on who is leading the party!!!!

People now detest to stand for congress, and at the mean time AAP too raised its head. Happening of all this things at the same time some how has leaded BJP to this glorious win. But it is uncertain that parties like AAP would pop out again creating such scenario. Now the thing which is to considered is that , the party that could claim a clear win is again itself BJP. But, in any case if a aam amdmi finds that BJP is somehow lacking to stand in his premises then he will not waste his vote again for BJP next time. Now it will be hard for any party for claiming a precise takeover, so possibilities says it will be an another coalition government. So might be the beginning of Modi is too good but, In politics uncertainty is too certain. Predictions could be wrong at any moment. Best example is AAP itself.

Coalition politics was not requires before 1977 as there was only one party of national status. Today again in 2014, coalition politics is not required because there is only one party of national level. If Modi delivers on his promises then coalition politics will not come back until real deliverables are being delivered. Road of BJP beyond Modi and road of corrupt congress is beyond so called Gandhi family is not clear. Coalition politics will come for sure, may be not immediately but after some time. Yes, if constitutional amendment are made to allow only 2-3 parties to participate in election then coalition politics will be over.

Remember 1984 and Panchamarhi declaration of Congress. The Gandhis had to eat crow. Same fate awaits everyone who thinks one swallow makes summer and that era of coalition politics is over

Era of coliation is not yet over. It will all depend How NM is able to take regional parties on growth path
