Is the candidate more important than the party?

Political parties follow a certain ideology and go to elections with an agenda. While voters realize this, they are also concerned about development of the constituency and local issues. They want a representative who can address their problems. On the other hand, political parties field a candidate who has more chance of winning from a particular area, sometimes even overlooking questions over integrity and performance. Now, in these scenarios, should people vote for the party or the candidate?
yes (70%) 56 Votes

no (30%) 24 Votes

Yes, Candidate is more important to rule the people. But Good Party is necessary. So Party must choose good candidates.

One should must check out the candidate rather party, because candidate would be one who is responsible for the development of your locality not party.

A deserving candidate lead the party. I agree that the candidate is more important. If the leader possesses good qualities and clean image is always welcome by all in the party. We need that type of candidate who have the vision for development of the country, who can lead the party to the front. I strongly recommended that party will depends on the shoulders of such candidate. He/She should able to direct the party.

Parties will be forced to field good candidates if electorate reject bad candidates.

Now-a days in India most of the people supprt their party candidates blindly without looking for a better candidate. So a better candidate must stand from an influential party to win win.Otherwise no support watsoever.

Candidate is more important than party.Let say a person is a social activist devotes his time for the needy people than party will automatically give him a ticket if he is deserving.

There is no party without its members. If a group can't choose the right person to represent itself then how can you expect it to take up a challenge and succeed.

Party's just only a area of person to do something for people. but the candidate is only 1 is responsible for there regional development. If he is't good or loyal then 1 day party will def. get his hand out of this for proving our self clean..

Everyone observed one fact that all eligible voters blindly believed in BJP poster face perosn, Mr. Narendra Modi. Because of the mojo he created in Gujarat, everyobody was convinced that Narendra Modi will bring radical changes in India. But there is one fundamental question lies here is that did Modi alone do wonders in Gujarat? Humble man himself accepted the fact that he did not do any wonders, his team did. Undoubtedly, one man can bring drastic change with his doctrines and morals. But as far as no amalagation of people to follow him and covert those doctrines in policies, it is difficult to say that he will be successful in bringing radical changes. Candidate becomes popular with the hard work done by him and his team. The credit should go to the whole team. So as far as the being important is concerned, party would weigh higher than a candidate.

my beloved india is most important to united then corruption/racial cast system yup...candidate is the first person with power who can do so to be united india not rule india and divide india..india got everything....not really need to rely on another nation..why indian people forced to leave own country for jobs or migrate????because of failing system to creat jobs/vision/empowerment. we need party with majority to change this old british version...its past we have to move forward with own new laws not old british laws.we need united india.all candidate must know this...nation is more important then corruption/money...you serve your nation with full of human dignity...vande matram

The party is a symbol of citizen's intregration to form an alliance and speak for certain causes, which it stands for. So how come the individual can supercede a party when he or she represents one.

your question is not correct and you are trying to get the opinion as per your line of thought. it will depend on the situation of the political scenario . last night there was a debate on NDTV by Miss Barkha and the panellist were alyque padamsee,Nadita das, mr srarbhai (ad agenecy) , a person from film industry and BJP leader. it was shocking to hear the kind of comments were given by Alyque padamsee, miss Nadita das and a person from filim industry . they were comparing Modi with Hitler and the perception was that India will be finished if Modi comes to power. you are judging a person without giving him a chance and By the way these 3 gentleman , what they have done for the coun try. only talk and lecture. mr Modi has worked through the ladder for last 40 years to reach this level not people Like Alyque padamsee who sit in a drawing room and sip wines and lecture people. by the what Nandita das has done for the society. there are people on the street who have been deprived of basic education in last 60 years are the people want the change which will provide food, water and other basic necessities for their family. also once there is growth which is for everyone than all the secular and religions issue take back seat.

donot agree.....in our india PM is choosen by the candidate. suppose candiate is good & PM nominee is poor....he cannot provide a good leadership and decision...and if some candiate is not good bt PM nominee is good...we should choose the second...see the condition of india

i always believe on notion of like attracts like ..... and i want to draw the leaf out of UP state witnessing a party of desperado's and goons at the helm .An ideology of party connects the candidate . If party's morals are right only the right candidates will join its bandwagon and vice versa,

. If party is good as BJP is , then we should concentrate more on gaining the support for the party. Good party fields good candidate. In India we youth support patriotic candidate like NAMO RAGA is not patriotic. we the youth of 21st century are very smart. For making the patriotic one -the head of our country we don't look others. The american president style we see in the Hollywood movies that they are also going with the army to fight for his country. So i think party is important. The face of BJP is like something Patriotic

No, there are lot of people who blindly vote for party irrespective of the candidate. They are not thinking whether the person can accomplish his task or not.

Madhup Rathi, Richmond, VA, USA, 2014-04-28 07:49:57.0
In the Indian parliamentary system, all MPs have to vote in the parliament as per the party line. In such situation, a good or a bad MP has no meaning, as they have to follow the party decision. Therefore, party ideology and their plans are more important for the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. At the local level, the candidate becomes more important as they are responsible to take care of their constituents local problem. An MP's primary role is to help his party reach the magic number and work with them to implement policies. For example, if you think that right-wing policies are best for the country, no matter how great is the candidate from the Communist party, it is pointless to vote for this candidate, as he/she will vote for policies which are exactly opposite of what you want.

No, since Candidate comes to the fore because of the party ideologies and also his/her own works for the progress and comfort of his or her constituency. How can the candidate become more important than the party? Though party does depend on its outstanding candidates for its progress, but works done by the grass root workers cannot be forgotten and trashed. Philosophy and ethos cannot be ignored. A candidate brings up the party and there is no doubt about it, but it is sad that in practice tall candidates start thinking they are taller than the party, but it is most likely that such thinking would not be sustainable and party and obviously the candidate would face rough weather. But while voting it is possible that voters do consider the party to which the candidate belongs to and accordingly decides to vote, but if the candidate is too bad it is likely that he/she would be ignored and may lose votes.
