Villivakkam (Assembly Constituency No. 14), is a residential–industrial seat in north-central Chennai, influenced by its strong railway presence, long-established working-class localities and expanding middle-class areas. With historical roots in railways, small-scale manufacturing and organised labour, the constituency mirrors Chennai’s gradual shift from an industrial base to a service-oriented economy, even as it continues to grapple with pressure from ageing civic infrastructure.
Villivakkam also carries cultural and historical value, being home to the Agatheeswarar Temple and a weekly market dating back to the British period that remains active today. Persistent local issues include waterlogging and inadequate drainage, poor condition of interior roads and footpaths, irregular drinking water supply, traffic snarls near railway level crossings, inefficiencies in solid waste management, overcrowding in government schools and hospitals, and noise and pollution from railway lines and industrial pockets.
Tamil Nadu went to polls on April 23.
