In Ambur, AC Vilwanathan of DMK secured a narrow victory, polling 74,102 votes. He defeated TVK’s Imthiyaz Pandarattudu Abdu by a margin of 7,131 votes. AIADMK’s R Venkatesan finished third with 47,100 votes, as the constituency witnessed a closely contested three-way battle ending in a DMK win.The Ambur constituency witnessed a high-profile four-way battle with the DMK re-nominating its strongman and incumbent A C Vilwanathan, who sought a third term. He faced a formidable challenge from R Venkatesan of the AIADMK, a 61-year-old businessman who sought to reclaim the seat for his party. The race was further electrified by the entry of Imthiyaz Pandarattudu Abdu representing the TVK and Afshia Nasrin S of the NTK.The 2021 election saw A C Vilwanathan (DMK) secure a decisive victory with 90,476 votes (50.86% vote share), defeating Nazar Mohamed (AIADMK), who polled 70,244 votes. The victory margin was 20,232 votes. In the 2016 election, the seat was won by R Balasubramani (AIADMK), who polled 79,182 votes, defeating V R Nazeer Ahmed (MMK) by 28,006 votes. The voter turnout this year was 90.61%, marking a historic high for the leather hub and a significant increase from the 74.15% recorded in 2021.
Ambur (Constituency No. 48), located in the Tirupattur district, is globally renowned for its leather exports and its culinary icon, the Ambur Biryani. A socially diverse and urbanised electorate, where the shoe-manufacturing industry employs a large segment of the population, makes it a critical barometer for labour welfare and industrial growth in northern Tamil Nadu. The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking actor Vijay’s political debut as a third force across all 234 constituencies.
