Study abroad scholarship: Japan invites Indian students for fully funded UG, research and diploma courses; check eligibility, stipend and how to apply
Japan has opened applications for its 2027 Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships for Indian students, offering fully funded opportunities across undergraduate, research, diploma and specialised training programmes. The scholarships cover tuition fees, monthly allowance and round-trip airfare, and are open to students interested in fields ranging from engineering and business to social sciences, agriculture and Japanese studies.
Students can apply under four categories — Research Students, Undergraduate Students, College of Technology (KOSEN) students, and Specialised Training College (STC) students. Applications for undergraduate, KOSEN and STC categories are open till May 25, 2026, while the research category application window closed on May 15.
Under the undergraduate scholarship, selected students will study for a bachelor’s degree in Japan.
For KOSEN students, Japan is inviting applications in technical and engineering-focused areas. The programme leads to an associate degree or diploma. The Specialised Training College scholarship covers vocational and professional fields.
Meanwhile, the Research Student category is meant for students seeking master’s, doctoral or professional graduate-level study at Japanese universities.
Applicants must propose a clear research plan and secure provisional acceptance from Japanese universities after the first screening round.
Selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend ranging from 117,000 yen to 145,000 yen depending on the programme and study level.
Preference will be given to applicants with Japanese language proficiency, though English-language ability is also assessed during the screening process.
For undergraduate applicants, students who have already completed Class 12 must have scored at least 80%. Students awaiting their 2027 board results must have at least 80% in Class 10 and a provisional certificate from their school.
For STC courses, the minimum marks requirement is 60%, while KOSEN applicants must have at least 65% in Class 10.
Research scholarship applicants must meet graduate school admission requirements in Japan and should generally be born on or after April 2, 1992.
Students must submit applications physically by post, courier or in person to the relevant Japanese Embassy or Consulate based on their state of residence. Applications sent by email will not be accepted.
Applicants need to fill the official MEXT application forms and attach supporting documents including academic transcripts, certificates, recommendation letters, medical certificate and language proficiency documents, wherever applicable.
Research scholarship applicants who clear the first screening will also need to contact Japanese universities directly and seek provisional acceptance before the final selection stage.
The first screening includes document verification, written tests in Japanese and English, and interviews. Final selection and university placement will be decided by MEXT between January and March 2027.
