VISAKHAPATNAM: Swati Mudundi, President of the Inner Wheel Club of Waltair, along with members of the Club, distributed 500 cloth bags at Seethamadhara Rythu Bazaar to raise awareness about using cloth bags instead of plastic. “Recognising the environmental hazards caused by plastic, the Inner Wheel Club of Waltair stepped in to provide eco-friendly cloth bags to Rythu Bazaar vendors and the general public. We also briefly explained the harmful effects of plastic on human life and the environment,” said Swati. Although the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has banned single-use plastics in Vizag city, the public and shops continue to use these prohibited plastics in violation of the rules. However, a significant portion of the public has shifted to environmentally friendly alternatives such as cloth bags and reusable bags made from eco-friendly materials. At this juncture, the Inner Wheel Club of Waltair is promoting the use of cloth bags at various locations to raise environmental awareness. Estate Officer of Seethamadhara Rythu Bazaar, K. Krishnamurthy, and staff member K. Satish were present.
According to Swati, Inner Wheel is one of the largest women’s voluntary service organisations in the world, with around 120,000 members across 103 countries. It is a 102-year-old international organisation. The President and members of the Inner Wheel Club of Waltair have undertaken various projects in the areas of youth development and education, environment, caring for underprivileged women and girls, health and community welfare, old age homes, orphanages, and have donated artificial limbs to those in need.
