Pawan Kalyan pushes ‘pollution-free Godavari’ ahead of Pushkarams
Rajahmundry: Deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan on Monday inspected ongoing Pushkaram preparations and assessed pollution levels along the Godavari by boat, travelling from Pushkarala Ghat to Kotilingala Ghat. He said the alliance government aims to organise the next Godavari Pushkarams as a prestigious event under the theme “Pollution-Free Godavari.”
The deputy CM stressed the urgent need for alternative wastewater management methods for Andhra Paper Mills and directed that all treatment processes strictly follow scientific standards. Officials were instructed to submit a comprehensive audit on pollutants entering the river and current mitigation measures.
Citing data, the deputy CM noted that nearly 55 MLD of sewage flows into the Godavari daily and called for an immediate halt to untreated discharges. Under the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP), ₹95 crore has been sanctioned out of ₹416 crore, and he directed that the funds be utilised to build modern sewage treatment plants ensuring zero discharge.
Addressing concerns over industrial effluents, Pollution Control Board chairman Krishnaiah said waste is currently diverted to distant ‘Lanka’ lands, with alternative solutions under consideration. Pawan Kalyan ordered expedited action and construction of an additional dedicated treatment facility.
At a review meeting in the Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation office, he expressed concern over river pollution, stating that neglect of natural water sources is forcing governments to spend heavily on restoring potable water. He ordered field inspections, pollution audits, and scientific testing of contaminated water points.
With an estimated 10 crore pilgrims expected—nearly double previous numbers—he called for large-scale arrangements. He announced a proposed ban on single-use plastic across six Godavari districts and a “Plastic-Free Rajahmundry” campaign. The government has identified 285 priority gram panchayats along the river to manage the influx.
Urging industry cooperation, the Deputy CM said industrial growth would not be hindered but stressed strict implementation of effluent treatment plants and pollution control measures to ensure a clean and sustainable Godavari during Pushkarams.
