Kanpur: In a road rage incident, a 60-year-old man and his 25-year-old son were stabbed to death while his elder son sustained critical in Kanpur late Sunday, police said.
One of the assailants was caught by locals on the spot and handed over to the police, while two others and their aides were arrested early Monday morning after an encounter.
According to police, the clash erupted after a minor collision between a motorcycle carrying the man and his two sons and another bike on the Yashoda Nagar Bypass, leaving Shiv Narayan Trivedi and his son Shivam dead and elder son Satyam, 30, critically injured.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers initially assaulted the victims with helmets before using bricks and knives, leaving the victims critically injured on the road.
Police rushed the injured to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead.
The man and his sons worked at a marble shop and were returning home after work when the incident occurred.
Police said an angry crowd managed to overpower one of the assailants, identified as 19-year-old Shiva Verma, thrashed him and later handed him over to cops.
The other two assailants, Karan Verma, 24, and Utkarsh Awasthi, 19, managed to flee.
The autopsy report noted multiple knife marks on the bodies of the deceased and the injured.
Meanwhile, at 4 am Monday, police arrested two suspects and their accomplice following an encounter. According to police, a tip-off was received that the accused were fleeing towards Hamirpur, after which teams surrounded them and attempted to intercept their vehicle. Asked to surrender, the suspects allegedly opened fire. In retaliatory action, Karan sustained bullet injuries in both legs, while his associates, Ujjwal and Sameer Gautam, were arrested after a brief chase.
DCP (South) Dipendra Nath Chaudhary said Karan has nearly five criminal cases registered against him at Naubasta police station, including charges of assault and murder. In 2023, he allegedly attacked a youth who later died during treatment, following which he was jailed in the case. He was released on bail about a year later. Police also said Karan was known to frequently carry a knife.
Police commissioner Raghubir Lal said, "We will ensure the accused face the harshest punishment by invoking stringent charges so that such crimes are not repeated in the future."
Police said none of the arrested accused had permanent employment, except Shiva, who worked as a delivery executive with an e-commerce platform.
