Visakhapatnam: Absconding for more than four years in a drug haul case, the prime accused was arrested by Parawada police in Uttar Pradesh.
The arrested person was identified as Tahzeeb Alam, a native of Didauli village in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh.
Anakapalle district police chief Tuhin Sinha said Parawada police intercepted a container truck and seized around 3,000 kgs of dry cannabis and arrested a few persons near Lankelapalem locality on June 8, 2021.
The investigation has revealed that Tahzeeb Alam is the mastermind behind the cannabis trade, and he has absconded. Since the registration of the case, he had been evading arrest, and a non-bailable warrant (NBW) was subsequently issued against him by the court.
Inspector of Parawada, R Mallikarjuna Rao, along with his team, maintained a close surveillance. Upon receiving concrete information about the accused, the police rushed to Uttar Pradesh and nabbed the accused, brought him to Anakapalle and produced him before the court for remand.
In another incident, a court in Chodavaram of Anakapalle district convicted and sentenced 32-year-old Korukonda Appala Patrudu alias Raju to ten years of rigorous imprisonment in a ganja case.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict. Raju was arrested by Chodavaram police in July 2015 when he was transporting 175 kgs of dry cannabis in a vehicle. The police seized the contraband and the vehicle. The court convicted Raju and slapped a fine. The police said another accused in the case, Killo Babu Rao, has been absconding.
