Jamshedpur: A 30-year-old woman allegedly threw her infant to death from the moving 12021 Howrah-Barbil Janshatabdi Express late on Wednesday. She was caught by fellow passengers and handed over to the police while she was trying to throw her three-year-old son to death in a similar fashion, police said on Thursday.
The incident occurred between Mahali Marup and Raj Kharsawan railway stations. The accused Mudrawati Gope, alias Hasina Begum, was on board the train with her husband Mohammad Shahabuddin and their two children. Mudrawati, a resident of Majhgaon in West Singhbhum district reportedly eloped with Shahabuddin four years ago. Her parents then registered an FIR with the Majhgaon police station, accusing Shahabuddin, a resident of West Bengal of kidnapping and luring their daughter.
The couple had boarded the train in West Bengal and were to de-board at Chaibasa.
The couple boarded the train after the police allegedly traced them and pressured them to surrender. Mudrawati allegedly threw her youngest child out of the moving train, alerting fellow passengers. Moments later, passengers intervened and stopped her as she attempted to throw her three-year-old son. The couple tried to pull the emergency chain and jump from the train, but passengers restrained them.
The couple were handed over to the RPF by passengers after the train reached Chaibasa station. “Mudrawati lost consciousness repeatedly and was admitted to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital,” RPF post-in-charge at Chaibasa said. The couple’s custody was then transferred to Kharsawan police.
“The woman is undergoing medical treatment. Her husband and surviving son are at the hospital under police surveillance,” Gaurav Kumar, the officer-in-charge of Kharsawan PS, said. “The body of the infant has been recovered, and police will question the woman regarding her motive once she is medically fit to speak,” the OC said.
