PUNE: A homemaker (60) was arrested on the charge of slitting the throat of her 80-year-old mother-in-law with a kitchen knife in their flat in Ambegaon Budruk, off Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass, around 2pm on Tuesday.
Senior inspector Rahul Khilare of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police said, "Only the two women were in the house during the murderous assault. The homemaker's husband (64), elder son, daughter-in-law and her younger son were away."
The middle-class family stayed in a 2 BHK flat in the Ambegaon Budruk area, the police said. "The homemaker and her mother-in-law fought over household issues for the past few years. The women argued again on Tuesday afternoon and the homemaker entered the bedroom of her mother-in-law with a kitchen knife. She first assaulted her mother-in-law on the chest and hands. Her mother-in-law screamed for help, but no one could hear her. Later, the homemaker slit the throat of her mother-in-law," Khilare said.
The son of the deceased, a retired person, was shocked to see his mother motionless and his wife with the knife when he returned home. Khilare said, "He immediately went to the nearby police chowkey."
He said, "The homemaker also made a call to the control room and informed the police about the murder. Our team visited the spot and detained her. We recovered the kitchen knife used in the crime from the spot. Later in the night, we took permission of a local court to arrest her."
