Patna: Indira Gandhi Science Complex, commonly known as the Planetarium, is set to elevate its visitors’ experience with a newly completed virtual reality (VR) theatre. The cutting-edge facility, located on the ground floor, will likely be inaugurated this month, introducing an exciting way to explore the universe through immersive VR technology.
The Rs 5.59 crore project, developed by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), spans 3,000 square feet and features 25 VR motion chairs with full 360-degree rotation. These chairs allow viewers to move freely within virtual environments, creating a highly realistic and engaging experience. Each VR show, lasting 10 to 15 minutes, can accommodate up to 25 people.
The VR theatre features four captivating shows, each offering a unique thematic experience. "Journey to the Moon" places viewers inside a futuristic space pod, providing breathtaking views of earth through a transparent canopy. "Mission to Mars" takes audiences on a thrilling interplanetary voyage, culminating in a dramatic landing on the Martian surface.
The third show offers an immersive tour of the International Space Station, highlighting panoramic views of earth, the docking bay, and key onboard modules like the destiny laboratory and the airlock.
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, "Roller Coaster Adventure" delivers a high-octane ride through virtual terrains—including a mine shaft, icy cave, waterfall plunge, and a cosmic ascent and descent.
For adults, the ticket price will be Rs 100 per person, while for kids between 8 to 15, the price will be Rs 50. The booking of the ticket will be done online.
Anant Kumar, the Planetarium’s project director, highlighted that the VR theatre uses advanced immersive technology to make viewers feel as though they are part of the on-screen environment. “This is a significant step in modernising the Planetarium and offering visitors a one-of-a-kind experience,” he said.
In addition to the VR theatre, the Planetarium will also flag off the mobile science exhibition on wheels, a bus that travels to different areas and schools to bring interactive science experiments and exhibits directly to kids. A souvenir shop selling science models, popular books, science kits, educational toys, and science-related equipment, among others, has also been set up.
An ‘Astro Park’ with 24 models on the campus is under construction, with two exhibits like horizontal and vertical solar clocks installed. According to officials, it will take another 3-4 months to complete this park. An observatory dome, which will have a state-of-the-art telescope, is also being constructed on the campus.
The Planetarium recently upgraded its main theatre with a new projection system, enhanced acoustics, and a dome-shaped hanging screen. A new astronomy and space gallery with interactive 3D models was also introduced last year.
