Patna: The Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) on Friday organised the 17th national youth parliament under the aegis of the Union ministry of parliamentary affairs. This national-level event was organised to enlighten the youth about the rich legacy of Indian parliamentary values. The youth parliament appeared to be a replication of the Indian parliament, with the ‘live’ performance of the students representing parliamentarians in different roles. Right from the oath-taking ceremony to heated discussions on issues of national importance, members from both the ruling party and the opposition played their roles effectively in the ‘house’.The topics of discussion included reported irregularities in the conduct of competitive examinations, the plight of Indian students living abroad, aviation safety, the Pocso Act enforcement, the impact of US tariffs and ever-increasing suicides by students. The ‘house’ also witnessed intense debate on the issue of the ‘one nation, one election’ Bill, which was ultimately passed by a majority in the house despite facing very stiff resistance from members of the opposition. The ruling party in power was led by the ‘prime minister’ Ayan Aditya Giri, whereas Ananya Giri led the opposition side, making fiery speeches. The role of speaker as presiding officer of the house was performed by Hardik Awasthi.
The entire house and its proceedings presented a picture of ideal functioning of the parliament, setting an example of vibrant and robust functioning of Indian democracy. The panel of elite adjudicators who adjudicated this competition included former Rajya Sabha member Bratin Dasgupta, Patna University political science department’s former head Shefali Roy and Union deputy secretary A B Acharya. At the outset, CNLU registrar S P Singh welcomed the guests and outlined the significance of this event for strengthening parliamentary values among youths.
