Nashik: Three people, including a 22-year-old newlywed woman, were killed and six others injured after the multi-utility vehicle they were travelling in rammed a stationary LPG tanker in Dharangaon taluka of Jalgaon district on Wednesday morning, the police said.
The accident occurred around 10am near Varad village on the Surat-Kolkata highway. The deceased have been identified as Puja Waghalkar of Akola, who got married on April 26, Dattu Bhagwat, and Jagdish Wakadkar. Six injured passengers, including a woman and a minor boy, have been admitted to the district civil hospital in Jalgaon with moderate to minor injuries.
Inspector Sunil Pawar, of the Dharangaon police station, said, "The MUV had started from Wapi in Gujarat around midnight and was heading towards Akola. The driver apparently dozed off due to continuous travel and lost control, crashing into an LPG tanker that was halted on the roadside near Varad."
"Puja had recently moved to her husband's home in Wapi after her wedding. As part of post-wedding customs, her family members had travelled there on Tuesday to bring her back to her parental home in Akola. The accident occurred during the return journey," the inspector added.
The police said there were 13 people, including the driver, travelling in the MUV. Those seated on the left side of the vehicle suffered severe injuries. Dial 108 ambulances took the victims to the hospital, where three were declared brought dead.
The Dharangaon police said a case is being registered, and preliminary investigation suggests driver fatigue as the cause of the accident.
