Gujarat Local Body Election Results 2026:
The BJP delivered a sweeping victory in Gujarat’s local body elections, reinforcing its dominance across the state ahead of next year’s Assembly polls. The party won all 15 municipal corporations and 78 of the 84 municipalities, while also securing 33 of 34 district panchayats and 220 of 260 taluka panchayats.

In urban areas, the BJP maintained a complete hold, including in major cities such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot, while also marking its debut victory in nine newly formed municipal corporations like Vapi, Navsari and Gandhidham. Out of 1,044 seats across the 15 corporations, the BJP won an overwhelming majority, leaving the Congress and AAP far behind.

The party also dominated rural Gujarat, though the opposition managed limited breakthroughs. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) wrested the Narmada district panchayat and made gains in select tribal regions, while the Congress secured notable wins such as in Ahmedabad’s Khadia ward, ending decades of BJP dominance there.

AAP’s urban presence shrank significantly compared to its 2021 performance, particularly in Surat, while the Congress saw a decline in its overall tally across local bodies. Despite scattered gains by opposition parties, the results underline the BJP’s continued electoral supremacy across both cities and villages.

The elections, held across 9,200 seats with over 4.18 crore eligible voters, are being seen as a key indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections.

The BJP secured nearly 60% vote share in Gujarat’s 15 municipal corporations, underlining its strong dominance in urban local body elections.

The party won 59.36% of the vote in the corporations, far ahead of the Congress at 26.46% and the Aam Aadmi Party at 10.27%.

The corporation results stood out as the BJP’s best performance across all tiers of local govt, showing its continued strength in major urban centres.

The outcome also underlines a decision of announcement of nine new municipal corporations, adding significance to the party’s urban support base.

While the BJP’s organizational machinery and political dominance remained largely unchallenged across rural Gujarat, the tribal-dominated Narmada’s hilly villages offered a rare patch of resistance. Dediapada’s AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava proved to be the lone thorn in the BJP’s otherwise smooth march, convincingly winning the district panchayat in the region that houses the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity, which the government claims has transformed the socio-economic condition of the tribal region.

AAP wrested control of four of the six taluka panchayats and the district panchayat with 15 of the 22 seats, a performance widely seen as a reflection of Vasava’s personal influence. In the 2021 elections, the BJP won 19 out of 22 seats while Congress won two seats.

A feisty tribal leader, 37year-old Vasava has built a reputation for hitting the roads, a white scarf slung across his shoulders, championing issues of villagers and tribal communities. Whether it is land disputes, forest rights, industrial accidents or local administrative grievances, he is often seen leading protests and confronting officials, projecting himself as a fearless voice of the hills and forests.

Two days ago, he slapped a relative of a man who died in a factory fire in Jhagadiya, Bharuch, while demanding higher compensation for the victims.

“It’s people’s victory. People trusted us and voted for us without any fear. I promise that our representatives will serve people efficiently in the coming days,” said Chaitar, who was once the trusted lieutenant of tribal strongman Chhotu Vasava, a seven-time MLA.

Gujarat Election Result 2026 Live Updates: CM Bhupendra Patel hails BJP's performance
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said on Tuesday that the sustained organisational effort of workers drove the BJP’s decisive victory in Gujarat’s local self-government elections. He said that as a result of the hard work of every worker, the lotus has bloomed across the state. Addressing a victory celebration in Ahmedabad, Patel expressed gratitude to the people of the state, saying, “Today’s victory is a triumph of the people’s trust in the BJP and the positive politics of development.” He added that Gujarat had “once again endorsed the politics of development” under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Referring to the campaign, Patel said, “During the development pledge meetings, roadshows and public interactions held across districts, talukas and cities, the mood of the people was clear that they had resolved to ensure BJP’s victory even before voting.” He further stated, “With the resolve of ‘Developed India at 2047’, the determination for a developed Gujarat has been further strengthened from villages to cities and across all levels through this massive mandate.”

Five years after being buried under a saffron landslide in 2021, the Gujarat Congress seems to be finally emerging from the rubble. The party has improved its numbers in key cities and made inroads in new urban regions, though its losses in rural areas reveal a split performance.

While it has not been able to better its seat tally compared to 2021 elections, Congress was forced into a gritty fight with AAP to protect its status as the primary opposition.

In the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Congress improved its tally to 32 seats, up from 24 in 2021. The party also dealt a setback to AIMIM by winning back all seats in Jamalpur and Maktampura wards, areas where it had earlier lost ground. A similar trend played out in Rajkot, where Congress increased its strength from four to seven seats.

The gains were helped by a clean sweep in Ward 16, where local resentment over recent demolitions appeared to influence voters.

In Surat, where the party had failed to win even a single seat in 2021, it finally managed to open its account with one seat. Some of the most notable gains came in newly formed municipal corporations.

Gujarat Election Result 2026 Live Updates: AMC polls see big wins, major losses
The recent elections have delivered a split verdict for prominent leaders from the BJP, Congress and AIMIM. While some heavyweights extended their winning streaks, others faced unexpected defeats. Key wards saw close contests and surprising outcomes. Party loyalties and local factors played a huge role

TOP 5 HEAVYWEIGHT WINNERS

DEVANG DANI: Key BJP leader, Devang Dani, secured his third consecutive win from Bodakdev ward. First elected in 2015, he won in 2021 and again in 2026. Dani has previously served as chairman of both the town planning committee and the standing committee, and is once again being considered for a key post. He is associated with the RSS and is considered a trusted ally of chief minister Bhupendra Patel.

HITESH BAROT: BJP’s Hitesh Barot retained his Thaltej seat, marking his second straight victory. Having served as a standing committee chairman from 2021 to 2023, Barot is now being seen as a strong contender in the race for mayor. He is regarded as a close associate of Union home minister and Gandhinagar MP Amit Shah.

JAINIK VAKIL: One of the biggest surprises came from Paldi ward, where Jainik Vakil won on a BJP ticket after being fielded at the last moment. Initially, Ashish Shah was declared the candidate, but Vakil replaced him on the final day of nominations. Vakil, who also won in 2021, has previously served as the revenue committee chairman, and is being viewed as a potential contender for the standing committee chairman’s role.

MUSTAK KHADIWALA: In Jamalpur ward, Mustak Khadiwala made a successful return to Congress. Initially elected as a Congress councillor in 2010, he left the party in 2015 and later won as an AIMIM candidate in 2021. Ahead of the 2026 elections, he rejoined Congress and contested from Jamalpur, winning his third term as a councillor. Khadiwala is considered an influential leader within the Muslim Chhipa community in the area.

SHEHZAD KHAN PATHAN: From Danilimda ward, Congress leader Shehzad Khan Pathan continued his winning streak, securing victory for the fourth time. Elected for the first time in 2010, Pathan went on to win elections in 2015, 2021 and 2026. He served as the leader of opposition in the Ahmedabad civic body for four years during the previous term. Despite a drop in voter numbers in the ward due to factors such as the Chandola lake demolition and SIRrelated changes, he retained his seat due to local support.

AAP hails improved performance in Gujarat local body elections
The AAP on Tuesday said it put up a strong performance in the Gujarat local body elections by winning one district panchayat - Narmada - and 12 taluka panchayats for the first time. Also, the party's seat tally across local bodies in Gujarat, where voting took place on April 26, jumped manifold as compared to the 2021 elections. While the BJP swept the polls by winning all the 15 municipal corporations and 33 out of 34 district panchayats in the state, the AAP clinched the remaining district panchayat, Narmada, besides winning more than 350 seats across local bodies, the results declared on Tuesday showed. The improved show came as a shot in the arm of the AAP, which received a big jolt last week after seven of its 10 Rajya Sabha MPs, led by Raghav Chadha, merged with the BJP after quitting the party. Addressing a press conference here, AAP’s Gujarat in-charge Gopal Rai expressed confidence that its tally would cross 400 seats once the counting is complete. Though final results for 250 taluka panchayats and 84 municipalities were awaited at the time of filing of this report, data from the State Election Commission (SEC) showed that the ruling BJP won most of these local bodies while some were bagged by the Congress, AAP and Independent candidates.

Gujarat Election Result 2026: Hindu woman scripts victory in Muslim-majority Godhra ward
Defying odds in a communally sensitive pocket of Godhra — Ground Zero of the 2002 Gujarat violence — an independent candidate, Apexa Soni, scripted an unlikely victory from Ward 7, where Hindu votes are negligible, underscoring a rare show of social harmony and grassroots support.

The ward comprises Satpul, Hayatni Wadi, Vachla Odha, Chuchla Plot, Geni Plot and other localities. It is less than a kilometre away from Godhra railway station and Signal Falia, two sites closely linked to the Sabarmati Express burning, which triggered the riots.

After narrowly losing the 2021 election by around 100 votes, Apexa was hesitant to contest again. However, residents — largely from the Muslim community — urged her to re-enter the fray, assuring their full backing.

Gujarat Election Result 2026: BJP secures first win on Bahiyal seat
The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has secured its first victory on the Bahiyal seat, which has an overwhelming Muslim majority, in the Gandhinagar district panchayat. Six months ago, the town witnessed communal riots for the first time, leading to a mega demolition drive.

The Congress party has been winning this seat since independence. The Muslim communities here make up more than 80% of the total voters. Though Congress won the taluka panchayat of Dehgam, comprising Bahiyal, the party lost the seat in the district panchayat. The party members are in shock over the result.

A former member of taluka panchayat, Mushtaq Chauhan, said, “This is a mystery for us. Congress could never have lost this seat. Of the 7,700 voters, 6,059 voted in these elections.”

Bahiyal witnessed its first communal unrest in Sep 2025 after violence broke out over social media posts, with stone-pelting reported during a garba event. State home minister Harsh Sanghavi visited the town and assured swift police action. More than 60 people, most of them Muslims, were detained. In Oct, authorities razed 186 shops owned by members of the minority community.

In 2026, BJP improved its performance slightly in the west, winning 68 of 72 seats. Congress won four seats in the region, gaining two, while AIMIM lost all three of its earlier seats.

In the eastern part, BJP had won 93 of 120 seats in 2021, Congress 22, AIMIM four, and an Independent one. In 2026, BJP won 92 seats, losing one, while Congress improved to 28 seats, gaining six. AIMIM and the Independent candidate lost all their seats.

BJP has consistently won the AMC elections in 2005, 2010, 2015, 2021, and now 2026. Congress last held power in the corporation after the 2000 election.

Following delimitation in 2007, the political dynamics of AMC shifted significantly. Seven municipalities and 30 village panchayats — including Chandkheda, Ranip, Kaligam, Thaltej, Sarkhej, Bodakdev, Vejalpur and Jodhpur — were merged into AMC, expanding the western part of the city. Later, in 2021, areas such as Bopal-Ghuma were also added.

The ruling BJP yet again underlined its supremacy over Gujarat’s political landscape on Tuesday as it swept the local body polls, winning all 15 municipal corporations and 78 of the 84 municipalities, reiterating its complete dominance in cities and towns.

The saffron party also posted a spectacular performance in villages, winning 33 of the 34 district panchayats and 220 of the 260 taluka panchayats.

The sweet taste of victory was marred only by the opposition parties — Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) — posting some key wins in rural Gujarat, with AAP wresting the Narmada district panchayat from BJP while Congress grabbed the Khadia seat, considered a BJP citadel, with the party winning it for 46 years in Ahmedabad city.

As votes were counted on Tuesday morning, BJP maintained a winning streak in all municipal corporations. It swept Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar cities while making its power debut in nine newly formed municipal corporations in Navsari, Gandhidham, Morbi, Vapi, Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Porbandar and Surendranagar.

Of the total 1,044 seats in 15 cities, BJP won a staggering 937, Congress 95, AAP and others got six seats each. Most of AAP’s gains as a debutante in Surat city in 2021, when it won 27 seats out of 120, were reversed as its tally diminished to just four seats in a single ward.

In towns, BJP won 78 of the 84 municipalities for which polls were held while Congress won six.In the last elections in 2021, 81 municipalities had gone to polls, with BJP winning 75, Congress four and others two.

AHMEDABAD: BJP’s unstoppable landslide in Gujarat rural and semi-urban areas has once again underscored the saffron party’s tough-to-breach grassroots connect and Congress’s yet another failure to emerge as an option and inability to cash in on some issues that came on a platter.

Despite grievances over crop losses, floods, water and power supply, and infrastructure issues, the BJP’s deep booth-level organization, welfare outreach, and the formidable Modi brand helped consolidate support.

Notably, the campaigning in this election was subdued AAP’s splitting of antiBJP votes further tilted the balance, while higher rural turnout reinforced the ruling party’s.

Gujarat Election Result 2026: Top 5 high-profile losers
Rajshree Kesari: Congress leader Rajshree Kesari, who was the only councillor to win two consecutive terms from Chandkheda ward, lost this time. Kesari had first contested from the ward in 2010 and lost, before going on to win in 2015 and 2021.

Pareshkumar Anand: In Khadia ward, BJP candidate Pareshkumar Anand, son of former mayor Lalji Parmar (1997-1998), failed to win on his electoral debut. The loss is notable as Khadia is traditionally considered a BJP stronghold.

Nikulsinh Tomar: Another setback for Congress came in Kubernagar ward where Nikulsinh Tomar was unable to defend his seat. Known as an NCP leader, Tomar fought on a Congress ticket in 2021 and won. The ward drew attention this time, following a clash between Congress and BJP workers at a polling station, which led to a police complaint being filed against Tomar.

Kaku Bharwad: Independent candidate Kalu Bharwad, lost from Lambha. Denied a Congress ticket, he won as an independent in 2010, lost in 2015, then won in 2021. A video allegedly showing him distributing money to voters went viral online ahead of recent polls.

Iqbal Sheikh: A significant upset came in Gomtipur ward where five-time councillor Iqbal Sheikh lost after switching parties. Sheikh first won as an independent in 2000, joined Congress and went on to win in 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2021. In 2026, he left Congress and contested as an AIMIM candidate.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Result: AIMIM wiped out in AMC polls, loses all ground despite Owaisi campaign
The AIMIM faced a total washout in the 2026 AMC elections, failing to win a single seat.

This marks a sharp decline from its 2021 debut of seven councillors. Despite fielding 36 candidates in over 10 Muslim-dominated wards, the party was rejected, with several candidates losing their security deposits in Shahpur, Khadia, and Behrampura.

Internal friction weakened the party early; two Jamalpur councillors resigned before the polls, including Mustaq Khadiwala, who defected to Congress and won.

In Danilimda, the party had no presence after both candidates withdrew. Even Asaduddin Owaisi’s high-profile campaigning couldn’t save the Jamalpur panel from defeat.

While AIMIM finished second in Gomtipur, Congress swept the ward. Ultimately, the party was erased from the municipal house, failing to defend its strongholds in Jamalpur and Maktampura.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Result: Five sons of ex-councillors win; Khadia defies dynasty
In the 2026 AMC elections, six sons of former councillors from the BJP and the Congress contested the polls. The BJP fielded five sons of former councillors, while the Congress gave a ticket to one.

Of these, four sons of former BJP councillors emerged victorious, while the son of a former councillor and ex-mayor lost the election.

The son of a former Congress councillor who was fielded also won the polls.

In Khadia ward, BJP candidate Pareshkumar Anand, son of former city mayor Lalji Parmar, was defeated. In Kubernagar ward, the BJP fielded Umedsinh Yadav, whose mother Kala Yadav was a former councillor, and he won the election.

From Chandkheda ward, Yashkumar Jadav, the son of two-term BJP councillor Jayanti Jadav, was fielded by the BJP and secured a win. Likewise, Maulik Patel, the son of former councillor Atul Patel, contested again from the Ramol Hathijan ward and won. Maulik Patel, son of late Gautam Patel, a former councillor from Isanpur ward, was again fielded by the BJP from Isanpur ward. Congress candidate from Gomtipur, Zulfi Khan Pathan, son of former councillor Taufiq Khan Pathan, also won the election.

Apart from this, Umang Nayak served as councillor from Khadia ward between 2021 and 2026. In the 2026 polls, his wife, Hetal Nayak, was fielded by the BJP from Khadia ward but lost. Kranti Maulik Ashokbhai Bhatt, also known as Kranti Koumil Gandhi and niece of former MLA Bhushan Bhatt, was fielded by the BJP from Paldi ward and won the election.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Result: Congress storms Khadia, ends BJP’s 40-year dominance in historic upset
When the BJP secured a massive 160-seat mandate in the AMC elections, the Walled City’s Khadia ward delivered the biggest shock. For the first time in over 40 years, the BJP was wiped out in its traditional stronghold. Since the 1980s, Khadia remained an uninterrupted BJP fortress, but in 2026, the Congress swept all four seats.

Dating back to the Jan Sangh era, Khadia had served as a strategic electoral centre for senior leaders, and following the formation of the BJP in 1980, the BJP retained uninterrupted control in the ward till 2025. The 2026 results, however, marked a significant reversal.

The Congress panel — Dhruv Priyakant Kalapi, Iliyaskhan, Meena Nayak, and Birju Thakkar — defeated the BJP’s candidates, including former councillor Pankaj Bhatt and Pareshkumar Anand, son of a former mayor.

The victory margins were decisive. For instance, Kalapi polled 21,785 votes against the BJP’s 19,390. Across the women’s seats, Congress candidates secured over 20,000 votes each, comfortably outpacing their BJP rivals.

The election campaign in Khadia turned sharply polarized. Former BJP MLA Bhushan Bhatt triggered controversy by saying, “We will not let Khadia ward become Pakistan.” The remark drew sharp criticism from Congress leader Imran Khedawala, while some Congress leaders countered with the slogan, “We will not let Khadia ward become Israel.” The campaign witnessed accusations and counter-accusations centred on Hindu-Muslim and Pakistan-Israel narratives.

Gujarat Election Result 2026: With BJP winning over 90% of seats, no LoPs in 10 civic bodies
The sweeping electoral victory by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across Gujarat’s municipal corporations has resulted in a striking democratic gap, with 10 of 15 municipal corporations failing to meet the mandatory 10% seat threshold required to appoint a leader of opposition (LoP).

Two, Morbi and Porbandar — have no opposition presence at all, as the BJP secured every single seat.

In eight others — Mehsana, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Nadiad, Vadodara, Navsari and Surat — the BJP’s dominance crossed the 90% mark, effectively disqualifying opposition parties from claiming the LoP post under existing rules.

Surat witnessed a dramatic collapse of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which dropped from 27 seats in the 2021 civic polls to just four seats this time. All four winners came from Ward 17 (Puna East), including city unit president Dharmesh Bhanderi.

Prominent AAP leaders, including state general secretary Manoj Sorathiya and former LoP Payal Sakariya, lost their contests. The Congress, which had no representation in 2021, managed to secure just one seat.

Interestingly, AAP made initial inroads in Jamnagar, winning two seats.

Gujarat Election Result 2026: BJP romped home in taluka panchayats too
In towns, BJP won 78 of the 84 municipalities for which polls were held while Congress won six. The BJP’s winning juggernaut met with some bumps in the hinterland. While it swept 33 of the 34 districts, AAP proved a fly in the ointment for the BJP in Narmada district.

Led by its firebrand MLA Chaitar Vasava, who had been relentlessly fighting for tribals on the ground, AAP wrested this district panchayat from BJP, spoiling its perfect winning score.

The saffron party romped home in taluka panchayats too, winning 220 of the total 260 taluka panchayats. Of the total 5,234 seats up for grabs in taluka panchayats, BJP secured 3,674, Congress won 1,050, AAP won 407 while others got 97 seats.

Political experts noted that even as AAP lost ground in Surat, it more than made up for the loss by making good gains in rural Gujarat.

Apart from wresting Narmada district, AAP posted wins in tribal seats in south Gujarat and Saurashtra, namely Dediapada, Chikda, Garudeshwar, Valia, Bagasra, Lalpur, Junagadh, Visavadar, Sagbara, Chhota Udepur and Kavant taluka panchayats.

Congress picked up 1,740 of the total 9,992 seats across local bodies. Its overall victory tally dropped this election as it won 18 taluka panchayats against 33 in 2021.

In Patdi Municipality, the party again secured all 24 seats, including 16 uncontested and eight through polling, with counting completed.

In Viramgam Municipality, the BJP crossed the halfway mark in the 36-member body, with 13 candidates elected unopposed and six more seats won as counting continued.

In Dholka Municipality, the party moved well past the halfway mark, winning 11 seats unopposed and 10 through polling, with results declared for 21 of the 36 seats and counting still underway.

Counting began earlier in the day at designated centres across the state under arrangements made by the State Election Commission, following polling held on April 26.

Gujarat Election Results 2026 Live: BJP panels win in Wards 4, 7, and 13 in Vadodara Municipal Corporation polls
16 More Updates
The BJP reaffirmed its dominance in Gujarat’s political landscape with a sweeping victory in the 2026 local body elections, winning all 15 municipal corporations and 78 of the 84 municipalities. The party also delivered a near-clean sweep in rural bodies, securing 33 of 34 district panchayats and 220 of 260 taluka panchayats, underlining its control across both urban and rural regions.

In major cities, the BJP retained or expanded its hold in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar, while also marking its debut in nine newly formed municipal corporations including Navsari, Vapi and Gandhidham. Of the 1,044 seats across the 15 corporations, the BJP won an overwhelming majority, leaving the Congress and AAP far behind.

Despite the BJP’s dominance, the opposition registered scattered but notable gains. The Aam Aadmi Party wrested the Narmada district panchayat and made inroads in tribal belts across south Gujarat and Saurashtra. The Congress, meanwhile, pulled off symbolic wins such as its victory in Ahmedabad’s Khadia ward, ending decades of BJP dominance.

While AAP’s urban presence shrank sharply compared to its 2021 performance in Surat, it compensated with improved rural gains. The Congress saw a dip in its overall tally compared to the previous cycle, particularly in taluka panchayats.

Overall, the results highlight the BJP’s continued electoral supremacy in Gujarat, while also indicating emerging pockets of resistance from AAP in tribal regions and isolated but significant breakthroughs by the Congress.
