Amravati: In a major embarrassment for Maharashtra Police, a woman presumed dead in Jalgaon Jamod unidentified body case was later found alive, prompting suspension of two more officers taking the number of total suspension to six. A high-level probe will be conducted into lapses in investigation. Maharashtra director general of police (DGP) Sadanand Date, who visited Amravati on Monday for a crime review meeting, flagged serious irregularities in the handling of the case.
The case dates back to April 26, when an unidentified body was found near a farm in Rajura village under Jalgaon Jamod police limits. The body was mistakenly identified as that of missing woman Shivani Kalamekar. Claiming a breakthrough, police had arrested Shivani's father and brother. However, the probe took a dramatic turn when Shivani was later found alive, forcing the police to release the duo.
The probe is now being carried out by a special team led by Deulgaon Raja DSP Manisha Kadam. The DGP has directed Amravati Range IG Mahesh Patil to submit a detailed report within 2 days.
