Nagpur: Several parts of Vidarbha, including Nagpur, continued to reel under severe heatwave conditions on Tuesday, with the city recording its highest temperature of the season at 45.5 degrees Celsius, according to India Meteorological Department data.
The city had recorded its highest maximum temperature of the 2026 summer season so far at 45.4°C on April 27. Tuesday's reading marginally surpassed that mark.
Amravati emerged as the second hottest place in the country at 46.8°C, while Wardha was the third hottest at 46.5°C. Akola too remained under intense heat at 46°C.
At least six districts in Vidarbha recorded temperatures above the 45°C mark. Besides Amravati, Wardha and Akola, Chandrapur registered 45.2°C, Yavatmal 45.4°C, and Nagpur 45.5°C. Gadchiroli recorded 44°C, Gondia 43.8°C, and Bhandara 43°C.
The soaring temperatures were accompanied by extremely dry conditions in several districts. Nagpur recorded relative humidity of 21% in the evening, while Chandrapur reported 19%.
The IMD issued an orange alert for Akola, Wardha, and Amravati for two days beginning May 20, warning of severe heatwave conditions. A yellow alert was issued for Nagpur and other Vidarbha districts, indicating continued hot and uncomfortable weather conditions.
The maximum temperatures remained 2 to 5 degrees above normal across most districts. Amravati recorded a departure of +4.7°C above normal, while Wardha was +3.2°C above normal and Nagpur +2°C.
Night temperatures too remained unusually high, offering little relief. Wardha recorded a minimum temperature of 32.8°C, while Akola saw 32.1°C and Yavatmal 31.2°C.
