City girl gets India its first gold at maths olympiad

Mumbai: Shreya Mundhada from Mumbai has become the first Indian to win a gold medal at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), marking a milestone moment for the country at the 2026 edition held in Bordeaux, France.The four-member Indian team returned on Wednesday with a gold, silver and bronze, its best ever performance at the olympiad. Sanjana Philo Chacko from Kerala secured the silver, while Shivani Bharath Kumar from Tamil Nadu won the bronze. This is the second time that India sent an all-girls contingent to EGMO. This is also India's highest team ranking at the event so far, placing sixth among 67 participating countries. A total of 260 students took part, including 161 from 41 European nations. India has been participating as a guest country since 2015. The team was led by Dr Vaidehee Thatte, with Dr Mrudul Thatte as deputy leader and Aditi Muthkhod as observer. Officials attributed the performance to sustained training through the EGMO training camp conducted by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, along with support from National Board for Higher Mathematics under the department of atomic energy.
