Bijnor: A real-time alert generated by Meta helped police save the life of a 27-year-old woman in Bijnor within about 10 minutes after she posted a self-harm video on Instagram. The woman had also posted a note stating that "no woman should stay with her family after divorce", officials said on Thursday.
Meta's automated system flagged the content and sent an email alert to the UP Police social media centre in Lucknow. Acting on the digital tip-off on Tuesday, officials traced the mobile number and location linked to the account and relayed the information to Bijnor police. DGP Rajeev Krishna directed local police to take immediate action.
Bijnor circle officer Sangram Singh said a woman sub-inspector and her team reached the house within minutes and entered with the help of local residents. Police found a plastic bottle containing pesticide, and the woman (name withheld) was vomiting and in distress. She was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital.
Doctors treated her, and she was discharged after her condition stabilised, police said.
Officials said the woman was under emotional stress due to personal issues and was counselled. She told police that she had divorced her husband some years ago, was unemployed and living separately.
She was experiencing emotional distress due to personal and family-related issues and alleged that her family members did not treat her well.
Police provided counselling and guidance, following which she assured authorities that she would not attempt such a step again. Her family members expressed gratitude to the police for the swift response and timely intervention.
Bijnor superintendent of police Abhishek Jha said that under the collaboration between Uttar Pradesh Police and Meta, operational since 2022, alerts are sent to authorities whenever posts indicating possible self-harm are detected on Facebook or Instagram. "Between Jan 1, 2023, and Feb 8, 2026, a total of 2,063 lives have been saved under this initiative in Uttar Pradesh," he said.
