Bijnor: Two men died and four others suffered severe injuries when an SUV carrying them veered off a bridge and fell into the Malan river in Bijnor's Najibabad area in the early hours of Thursday.
The group, residents of Muni Ki Reti in Rishikesh of Uttarakhand, was returning home from a wedding in UP's Najibabad when the driver lost control of the speeding vehicle. The SUV crashed through the railing of the bridge and plunged into the Malan river.
Local residents who heard the sound of the accident rushed to the spot to initiate rescue efforts before police arrived to supervise the operation.
According to Najibabad circle officer Nitesh Pratap Singh, the deceased include Satish Kumar, 35, and Sachin Kumar, 30 -- both were small traders. Four other occupants of the car — Vishal Kumar (25), Mohit Singh (28), Vishal Kumar (35) and Ankit Kumar (30) — sustained severe injuries and were initially rushed to CHC Sameepur.
Due to their deteriorating health conditions, they were referred to AIIMS Rishikesh. Preliminary investigations suggest that the car was speeding, police said.
