Senne Lammens has admitted he received warnings before completing his surprise move to
Manchester United last September. The 23-year-old goalkeeper joined the English giants from Royal Antwerp in a deal for $18 million on transfer deadline day. Despite arriving with little international experience and no senior cap for Belgium, Lammens has quickly adapted to life at one of the world’s biggest and most scrutinized football clubs.
Taking up one of the most demanding roles in football, Lammens has impressed fans with his calm and simple style. He replaced experienced names such as Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, who both struggled for consistency. While Onana is currently on loan in Turkey and Bayindir is set to return home, Lammens has become a fan favorite at Old Trafford with his steady performances and grounded personality.
Senne Lammens opens up on recent pressure and his inspiration
Senne Lammens revealed he was cautioned about the intense spotlight that comes with playing for Manchester United. He explained at the World Book Day event on behalf of United's foundation that people told him the club is “a different animal,” especially because of social media pressure, and that it could be the biggest club in the world. Still, he felt ready for the challenge and believed it was the right step in his career.
During his home debut against Sunderland in October, fans humorously sang “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?” after he confidently caught a cross. The chant referenced club legend Peter Schmeichel and highlighted early appreciation from supporters.
Lammens credits third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton for helping him settle. He said Heaton often speaks about staying focused, not giving away simple chances, and keeping the team in the game even when not heavily involved. Lammens believes being dependable and avoiding mistakes is key to having a long career at a top club.
Lammens also opened up on his fame. He spoke about constantly getting papped even when he was hanging out with his girlfriend recently.
United’s goalkeeping scout Tony Coton played a major role in convincing the club to sign him. Lammens said Coton was honest from the start and gave him confidence before the deal was finalized.
Growing up, Lammens admired Manuel Neuer for his all-round ability and also looked up to fellow Belgian Thibaut Courtois. Under new head coach Michael Carrick, he says the dressing room atmosphere has been positive and full of belief.
