Trade bodies seek farm, industry push from new govt
Madurai: Trade bodies on Wednesday congratulated TVK chief C Joseph Vijay on his assembly election victory and urged the new government to prioritise farmers and a trade-friendly policy agenda.S Rethinavelu, founder-president of the Agri and All Trade Chamber, outlined key expectations, including promotion of modern farming techniques, creation of direct market linkages, interlinking of rivers, and steps to reduce post-harvest losses. He also called for protection of MSME traders and industrial units, and for building an investor-friendly climate, particularly in south Tamil Nadu, which lags in industrial growth. He further emphasised the need for clean and transparent governance with a strong focus on anti-corruption and accountability. "The government should harness youth power through innovative policies, introduce modern technology in agriculture, enable digital transformation in trade and generate skill-based employment," he said. Rethinavelu also sought better access to central schemes, funds and infrastructure projects by maintaining cordial ties with the centre, besides calling for decisive action against narcotics to protect students and ensure women's safety.
Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president N Jegatheesan also extended his greetings to Vijay, saying the TVK manifesto had inspired confidence among the public. "Startup support schemes, financial aid to MSMEs, income support for farmers, interest waiver on farm loans, and improvements in infrastructure, women's safety and employment have reassured both industry and agriculture," he said. He added that promptly addressing issues faced by trade and industry, and forming expert advisory committees to guide decision-making, would help bridge the gap between the government and the people and enable effective governance.
