Implement panel’s recommendations in Tuticorin firing case: Federation
Madurai: Tamil Fishermen Federation (Tamil Meenavar Kootamaippu) has urged the state government to implement Justice Aruna Jagadeesan inquiry commission's report on the 2018 Tuticorin police firing incident on anti-Sterlite protestors which claimed the lives of 13 people.Addressing reporters here on Wednesday, president of the federation, advocate A Rajini said that the police opened fire against people who were involved in a peaceful protest by expressing their environmental concern. Even after nearly eight years, no actions have been initiated against the officials who were responsible for this incident.She said that the commission which conducted a detailed inquiry into the police firing incident submitted a report to the state government recommending action against the police and revenue officials. Despite the same, no action was initiated. She urged the government to initiate departmental action against the officials.She said that following the police firing incident in 2018, the present chief minister C Joseph Vijay visited the family members of J Snowlin who was killed in the incident.Rajini also said that a memorial should be constructed in Tuticorin In memory of the people who were killed and sustained injuries in this incident. She urged the state govt to pay an enhanced compensation of Rs1 crore each to the family members of the deceased and Rs50 lakh who sustained injuries in this incident.
