Kanyakumari: The International Fishermen Development Trust (INFIDET) requested rescue operations for a stranded 12 fishermen hailing from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Assam after their mechanized boat went adrift in the sea following an engine failure.
The vessel, “Mary Shanio”, which set sail from the Kochi harbour on May 12, is currently stranded near the Maharashtra coast, sparking panic among family members. The crew includes eight fishermen from Kanyakumari, three from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, and one from Assam, said INFIDET president P Justin Antony.
INFIDET urged the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Mumbai to swiftly intervene before weather changes or rations get depleted. Antony said the outfit has also sent representations to the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Assam. The boat immobilized hundreds of nautical miles off the Maharashtra coast, he added.
In a separate incident on Sunday, “Susanna,” a mechanized fishing boat operating from Thengaipattinam in Kanyakumari district with six crew members, was hit by a ship named “Ocean Radiance” about 10 nautical miles off the Kasaragod coast. One fisherman was injured in the incident. The crew has filed a complaint with the authorities in Kasaragod.
