In response to the latest trends indicating Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma leading against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Smriti Irani in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, Sharma expressed gratitude to the constituents and the Gandhi family. Addressing reporters in Amethi, Sharma stated, "I would like to thank the people of Amethi and the Gandhi family." He added, "However, let the counting conclude. We will talk after that."

As per the latest data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), Sharma is leading with 62,358 votes, while BJP's Irani trails behind at the time of this report.

Amethi, one of the most closely watched constituencies among the 543 Lok Sabha seats, witnessed a predicted tough battle between BJP's Irani and Gandhi family loyalist KL Sharma in the exit polls.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Irani defeated Congress candidate Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, a traditional Congress stronghold for years. However, in the 2024 LS polls, Gandhi contested from Kerala's Wayanad and Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli, which has been represented by former Congress president Sonia Gandhi since 2004.

In Uttar Pradesh, the state with the highest number of constituencies, the Samajwadi Party (SP) is leading on 35 seats, while the BJP is leading on 34 seats, a significant shift from the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The Congress is currently leading on seven seats, according to the latest trends by the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA has surpassed the majority mark in early leads, with the INDIA bloc crossing 200 seats, defying exit poll predictions.

The Bharatiya Janata Party aims for a third consecutive term in power, while the Opposition under the umbrella of the INDIA bloc seeks to challenge the ruling party's dominance.

Despite most exit polls predicting a continued term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with many projecting a two-thirds majority for the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Congress party and its allies have dismissed the exit polls as "orchestrated" and a product of "fantasy," asserting that the opposition INDIA bloc will form the next government at the Centre.

Strict security measures have been implemented to ensure the smooth conduct of vote counting for over 8,000 candidates in this general election.

Two polls predicted that the BJP would improve its numbers from the 303 seats it won in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In the 2019 elections, the NDA secured 353 seats, with the BJP winning 303 alone, while the Opposition's UPA obtained only 93 seats, with the Congress securing 52.

Even before the vote counting, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured one seat in the Surat Lok Sabha constituency.

The Lok Sabha elections were conducted across the country in seven phases from April 19 to June 1.

In the latest updates from Uttar Pradesh's electoral battleground, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh are leading in their respective constituencies of Varanasi and Lucknow. However, Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Mahendra Nath Pandey are facing tough competition, trailing in Amethi and Chandauli.

In the politically significant state of Uttar Pradesh, which holds sway over 80 Lok Sabha seats, 11 Union Ministers are contesting.

Currently leading are PM Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State for Law and Justice SP Singh Baghel, and Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti.

Those currently trailing include Smriti Irani, Mahendra Nath Pandey, Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, Anupriya Patel, Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma, Kaushal Kishore, and Ajay Mishra Teni.

According to the Election Commission's data at 12:30 pm, PM Modi was leading by 79,566 votes over Ajay Rai of the Congress in Varanasi. Meanwhile, in Lucknow, Rajnath Singh is leading by 19,642 votes against SP's Ravidas Mehrotra.

Pankaj Chaudhary leads by over 24,000 votes in Maharajganj, and SP Singh Baghel is ahead in Agra by over 70,000 votes.

In a reversal of fortune, Smriti Irani trails K L Sharma of the Congress by nearly 50,000 votes in Amethi, while Mahendra Nath Pandey lags behind SP's Birendra Singh in Chandauli by 1,134 votes.

Sanjeev Kumar Balyan trails in Muzaffarnagar to SP's Harendra Singh Malik by over 28,000 votes. Anupriya Patel is behind in Mirzapur by 1,554 votes to SP's Ramesh Chand Bind.

MoS Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma is trailing in Jalaun by more than 16,000 votes to SP's Narayan Das Ahirwar. Similarly, MoS Kaushal Kishore lags behind SP's RK Chaudhary by more than 60,000 votes.

Union MoS Home Ajay Mishra trails in Kheri by over 10,000 votes to Utkarsh Verma 'Madhur' of the SP.

Atul Garg, who succeeded former Union Minister V K Singh as the Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate for the Ghaziabad Lok Sabha constituency, is currently leading by a substantial margin of over 1.14 lakh votes, according to Election Commission trends reported on Tuesday.

Garg has garnered more than 3.26 lakh votes, while Congress' Dolly Sharma secured 2.11 lakh votes, and Bahujan Samaj Party's Nand Kishor Pundir received 38,653 votes as of 1:15 pm.

In the previous Lok Sabha elections of 2014 and 2019, Singh, a former Army chief, had won from Ghaziabad with a margin of over 5 lakh votes.

Garg, presently serving as an MLA in Uttar Pradesh from the Ghaziabad constituency, was named as the BJP's Lok Sabha candidate on March 24, shortly after Singh announced his decision not to contest the parliamentary elections.

In the ongoing tally of votes for the 2024 general elections, Bharatiya Janata Party MP and Sultanpur candidate, Maneka Gandhi, is currently behind by 20,524 votes according to early trends.

Samajwadi Party's Rambhual Nishad is leading, while Bahujan Samaj Party's Udraj Verma has garnered approximately 66,213 votes.

The contest in the Sultanpur Lok Sabha constituency is triangular, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Samajwadi Party (SP), and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) vying for victory.

Sultanpur comprises five Assembly segments: Isauli, Sultanpur, Sadar, Lambhua, and Kadipur, and is a General seat.

Historically, Sultanpur has witnessed a diverse representation with MPs from various parties. The Congress has won eight times, BSP twice, and BJP four times since Independence, indicating no single party's outright dominance in the constituency.

Amidst the ongoing counting of the Lok Sabha results, the deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Brajesh Pathak expressed his confidence in the BJP-led NDA winning the elections on 80 seats of Uttar Pradesh.

"Since the counting has begun, our all polling agents have reached the polling centres. After witnessing the enthusiasm in the elections, I am sure that the NDA alliance will definitely win elections on 80 seats."

Criticising the opposition's remarks, he said, "The opposition has derailed from their track. They are baseless. They just speak irrelevant facts. The public has rejected them as they have no any specific agenda and policies driven towards the development and welfare of the society."

BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi told PTI that his party contested from 75 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state, while alliance partners Apna Dal (Sonelal) contested from the Mirzapur and Robertsganj (SC) seats, the SBSP from Ghosi and the RLD from Bijnor and Baghpat.

Samajwadi Party spokesperson Deepak Ranjan said his party contested on 62 Lok Sabha seats in the state, while the Congress fielded its candidates in 17. One seat was allotted to the INDIA bloc partner Trinamool Congress.

Congress candidate from Mathura, Mukesh Dhangar says, "INDIA Alliance will form a government. There is no doubt about it. This victory (Dhangar's victory) will be of the people of Brij. This will 1000% be the victory of Banke Bihari and Maa Yamuna."

As India waits with bated breath for the Lok Sabha poll results, political analysts say this year's election was "one of the most polarised" with parties using caste and religion to garner votes.

While the BJP focused on integrating various backward castes under the Hindutva fold, the INDIA bloc tried to win over Other Backward Caste (OBC) voters by promising to conduct a caste survey if it is voted to power, they said.

Jagdeep Chokar, the co-founder of the poll rights body Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), said this election was "one of the most polarised" he has ever witnessed.

"There was polarisation along the lines of caste, religion and region. It was not like this before. Caste has always been one of the most important mobilising factors in elections, but here, both caste and religion-based politics were at play," he told PTI.

Dr Iftekhar Ahmad Ansari, an associate professor at Aligarh Muslim University, pointed out that the realignment of castes has presented a challenge to the BJP.

Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav on Monday said that exit polls are nothing but an attempt to demoralise the workers of the INDIA bloc and SP.
"Exit polls are fake. It is an attempt to demoralise the workers of the INDIA bloc and Samajwadi Party. Despite PM Modi fighting from Varanasi, the BJP is not even winning a single seat from the areas around Varanasi, Lucknow and Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat. Samajwadi Party and INDIA bloc are winning at least 60 seats in Uttar Pradesh." said Ram Gopal Yadav.

Exuding confidence, he said, "The INDIA bloc is going to win all seats around Varanasi which include Ghazipur, Chandauli, Azamgarh, Mau."

He emphasised that the INDIA bloc will surely emerge victorious on seats around Lucknow which include Barabanki, Hardoi, Unnao, and Sitapur. "All the seats around Gorakhpur will be won by us," he added further.

According to the state's Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa, the counting of votes will commence at 8 am today at 81 counting centres set up in 75 districts of the state.

Ahead of the counting of votes for Lok Sabha polls, Uttar Pradesh Minister Sanjay Nishad on Monday said that opposition parties did nothing for the public in their respective tenure and people's sentiment towards this will be reflected in the election results tomorrow.

Sanjay Nishad said, "After exit polls, there will be exact polls tomorrow. The opposition didn't do anything for the public for the last many years. Now that when we got a chance, things are being done in the interest of the public and this is the reason the public is with us."

Sanjay Nishad also said that Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has not yet understood the opinion of the public.

"NDA and BJP have done development and connected the public to the mainstream of development and this is the reason that the public's opinion is with the NDA, which Akhilesh Yadav is unable to understand and is facing continuous defeat," he said.

He also highlighted that INDIA bloc will be defeated as it has a weak organizational structure.

After the Uttar Pradesh unit of Congress alleged that a wall at a counting centre in Mirzapur was broken so that EVMs could be tampered with, the Chief Electoral Office (CEO) clarified that the boundary wall at Polytechnic College was opened to enable entry of Counting Agents of the candidates for Chunar Assembly segment since the paths of counting agents and counting personnel of Chhanbey Assembly segment were crisscrossing.

"The opening in the boundary wall of the Polytechnic College has been created to enable entry of Counting Agents of the candidates for Chunar Assembly segment/ Postal Ballot counting. This was necessitated as the paths of counting agents and Counting personnel of the Chhanbey Assembly segment were crisscrossing which is not as per the standard procedure. The entry was made on the advice of the General and Police Observer of Mirzapur PC," the CEO said in a post on 'X'.

Votes will be counted Assembly constituency-wise. Counting of votes for 80 Lok Sabha constituencies will be conducted by 80 Returning Officers and 1,581 Assistant Returning Officers. Counting of votes for Dadraul, Lucknow East, Gainsari, and Duddhi Assembly by-elections will be conducted by four Returning Officers and 26 Assistant Returning Officers. All counting and sealing proceedings will be conducted under CCTV surveillance. A blackboard/whiteboard will be arranged at each counting hall, and the names of the candidates and roundwise results will be written so that all the counting agents can see them.

The counting of votes for Lok Sabha elections will begin at 8 am today in Uttar Pradesh amid the three-tiered security arrangements. Counting will take place for 80 Lok Sabha seats and four Assembly by-poll seats at 81 centres in 75 districts. Postal ballot votes will also be counted on the same day. According to the chief electoral officer Navdeep Rinwa, a total of 851 candidates, including 771 men and 80 women, are in the fray in Uttar Pradesh. The highest number of 28 candidates are in the Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency and the lowest (4) are in Kaiserganj.

Rinwa said, "Counting of votes will be conducted at two centres each in Agra, Meerut, Azamgarh, Deoria, Sitapur, and Kushinagar districts, while counting of votes for eight Lok Sabha constituencies will be done in three districts, for 37 Lok Sabha constituencies in two districts, while for 35 Lok Sabha constituencies in one district."

Due to additional polling stations (1,127) in the Sahibabad Assembly constituency in the Ghaziabad Lok Sabha constituency, the counting of votes will be completed in a maximum of 41 rounds. "An adequate number of Central Paramilitary forces have been deployed to ensure smooth vote counting. There will be three-tier security at the counting centres -- including local, state, and CRPF police forces," he said.

The results will determine the political fate of Prime Minister Modi, eyeing a hattrick from Varanasi, as well as defence minister Rajnath Singh, who contested from Lucknow for the third consecutive time. Similarly, the fate of Union ministers Mahendra Nath Pandey, Smriti Irani, Anupriya Patel and a few others will also be decided. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi contested this time from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency, a seat earlier represented by his mother Sonia Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi represented the Amethi constituency thrice from 2004 before losing the seat to the BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019. He, however, was elected to the outgoing Lok Sabha from Kerala's Wayanad.
