UP 112 honours PRV personnel, call takers for saving lives

Lucknow: On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, Uttar Pradesh Police Director General (UP-112) Neera Rawat honoured 225 Police Response Vehicle (PRV) personnel and three call takers for their exceptional efforts in preventing suicides and saving precious lives.According to UP Police, since the inception of the UP-112 integrated emergency service in 2017, PRVs responded to over 41,580 suicide-related calls, rushing to scenes where individuals attempted to hang themselves, jump into rivers, leap from buildings, consume poison, or take other extreme steps. Their prompt action, coupled with first aid and CPR training, helped prevent countless tragedies. Three call takers were specially recognised for life-saving counselling. While Shivani Rai persuaded a distressed caller not to commit suicide over domestic disputes and immediately dispatched police assistance, another officer handled a case in which a woman consumed poison after family harassment, guiding the caller and ensuring PRV intervention saved her life. Safina, stationed in Prayagraj, calmed a caller who already ingested poison, kept him engaged on the line, and arranged police and ambulance support in time. The recognition ceremony also highlighted recent PRV interventions. The first case pertains to Kanpur where on May 3 a PRV forced open a locked room where a man attempted to hang himself. They cut him down and revived him with CPR before rushing him to hospital, saving his life. In another case, a PRV rescued a woman and her two children sitting on a railway bridge waiting to jump in front of a train, counselling her and handing her safely to police in Agra on Apr 9. In Pratapgarh, a PRV saved a woman with her seven-month-old twins who were sitting on a railway track minutes before a goods train was due. In Lucknow, the PRV pulled a drowning woman out of the Gomti river with the help of locals, sending her to hospital just in time, on Sept 9.
