TMC man, close to MMiC, held for extortion

Kolkata: Amit Chakraborty, alias Noni, a Trinamool functionary, allegedly close to BMC councillor and MMiC Debraj Chakraborty, was arrested late on Tuesday in connection to an extortion and assault case linked to a promoter.Debraj is former MLA Aditi Munshi's husband. Trinamool councillor of Ward 9 Samaresh Chakraborty was earlier arrested in the same case.In Dec 2025, Amit and Samaresh allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh from a promoter, Kishore Haldar, in Raghunathpur under Baguiati PS. Haldar reportedly paid Rs 3 lakh and when he refused to pay the rest, he was allegedly assaulted with gun butts and iron rods. Haldar lodged a complaint at Baguiati PS.Police said Haldar later alleged that on May 4, five to six men threatened him with dire consequences and an attempt on his life was made. A district court on Wednesday remanded Amit in 10-day police custody. tnn
