Kolkata: Central forces were deployed in New Alipore on Friday after a large group of protesters, including BJP supporters, vandalised Suruchi Sangha, one of Kolkata’s most prominent Durga Puja clubs, which is closely associated with former state minister Aroop Biswas and his brother Swarup. The violence erupted a day after Swarup was arrested. On Friday afternoon, a large crowd gathered outside the club in New Alipore’s Block M, raising slogans against the brothers and accusing them of corruption, intimidation and misconduct. Protesters broke locks, entered the club rooms and allegedly ransacked furniture, banners, flex, documents and other items. Television sets, files and other materials were dragged out, while while posters and hoardings linked to the club were torn down. The situation prompted deployment of central forces and cops to restore order and prevent further damage. Tension prevailed in the area for several hours as protesters continued demonstrating outside the club.Several locals claimed the club had become inaccessible to ordinary people despite being a community institution. “The club officials had used the premises for activities unrelated to public welfare. We have found luxury furnishings, beds, expensive sarees, packaged electronic items and other things inside. What is the use of such items inside a club?” asked a protester.During the vandalism, demonstrators also claimed to have discovered documents related to previous municipal elections, voter lists, polling agent instructions, and job-related applications from aspiring film industry workers. The authenticity and significance of the documents have not been officially confirmed.BJP worker Arindam Das alleged he had been assaulted during the unrest by some Trinamool supporters. The Trinamool supporters, however, fled when BJP workers outnumbered them. Sources said a section of Trinamool supporters and club members were chased by the mob and ran into New Alipore Police Station to take refuge. They were later brought out under central forces’ protection.BJP functionary Soma Chowdhury accused individuals linked to the club of intimidating residents, and alleged that women had been called to the club and subjected to inappropriate proposals. Formed in 1952, Suruchi Sangha is known for its thematic Durga Puja. The club also competes in CFL Premier Division, a football league in Bengal organised by the Indian Football Association. Swarup is the club’s secretary while Aroop is its chief patron. The puja has traditionally attracted senior political functionaries and large crowds from across the state.“Be it during Durga Puja or some other activity, the club officials, while dropping the Biswas brothers’ names, used to block the roads for days, causing trouble to local commuters,” a protester said.
