Kolkata: West Bengal’s state transport undertakings are scrambling to maximise the number of their buses on the roads following a significant surge in commuters after the state’s announcement of free bus rides for women.
Transport officials are rapidly repairing and deploying grounded vehicles. “We are trying to maximise fleet utilization,” a senior transport department official said. “A lot of buses are being deployed after repair. This has become imperative after the govt announced free rides for women.”
. Officials pointed out that the administration was determined to increase high-frequency runs so that passengers were not left waiting for long intervals at stops. Maintenance yards are now working on tight schedule to keep every available bus on the road.
