Sena (UBT) office bearers oppose new Sahyadri Tiger Reserve corridor
Kolhapur: Shiv Sena (UBT) office bearers, led by deputy leader Sanjay Pawar, met chief conservator of forests Shreelakshmi and submitted a memorandum opposing the proposed new corridor for the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve. They alleged that if Centre approved the proposal, it would hinder the development of nearly 550 villages across Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts. The delegation highlighted the difficulties faced by residents in villages located within the existing corridor and also warned of launching an agitation against the plan. Sena (UBT) convenor Vijay Devane said govt was attempting to impose a "no development zone" between the Radhanagri-Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary and Chandoli National Park."Such restrictions will severely impact development in the affected villages, many of which are in Kolhapur. Farmers are already struggling with wildlife threats from gaur, leopards, elephants and wild boars, and further restrictions will worsen their situation," Devane said.Sanjay Pawar demanded that taluka-wise public hearings in the 377 affected villages in Kolhapur district, stressing that the views of gram panchayats must be considered.
He also criticised the authorities for failing to adequately consult local communities, saying it is govt's responsibility to inform and involve residents before implementing such projects. On May 5, during a review meeting at the Kolhapur collectorate, guardian minister Prakash Abitkar directed officials to immediately convey the concerns of local villagers and public representatives to the forest department and Union govt.
