Kochi: A 74-year-old man from Elamakkara lost Rs 1.43 crore in an alleged online stock trading scam, following which cybercrime police station, Kochi, registered a case on Wednesday.
According to the FIR, the complainant, a resident of Elamakkara, was allegedly cheated by a person identified as Piyush Sharma, who allegedly convinced him that huge profits could be earned through trading in stock market.
Police said the accused allegedly collected the money from the complainant through 15 bank transactions carried out between Feb 26 and March 23. The complaint further alleged that after March 23, neither the invested amount nor the promised profit share was returned to the complainant.
The case was registered under Sections 316(2) and 318(4) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The FIR was initially registered at Elamakkara police station and later transferred to cybercrime police station, for further investigation.
Boy killed in accident: A five-year-old boy was killed in a road accident at Kalamassery on Wednesday after the scooter he was travelling on with his grandparents lost control following a collision with a truck.
The deceased was identified as Aideen Adam, son of Al Amin and a native of Panayikulam.
Police said the mishap took place near Premiere Junction around 1.30pm. Aideen was travelling with his grandfather Jamal and grandmother Beevi on a scooter when the vehicle allegedly tried to overtake a bus.
During the manoeuvre, a truck approaching from the opposite side is suspected to have brushed against the scooter, causing the rider to lose balance.
The child reportedly fell under the bus and suffered grievous injuries. He was taken to govt medical college, Kalamassery, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Jamal and Beevi also sustained minor injuries in the incident.
An investigation has been launched into the accident.
