Idukki: A massive explosion occurred inside a house at Upputhara in Idukki on Sunday morning, completely destroying the building and seriously injuring the house owner.
The incident occurred at the residence of M Ansari at Pakkaveedu in Upputhara. Ansari, who sustained severe burn injuries in the blast, was admitted to a private hospital in Pala. Police said he has suffered nearly 60% burns. The explosion shattered the walls of the house and blew apart the roofing sheets. The impact was felt in the nearby houses as well with residents left terrified.
Initially, locals suspected that an LPG cylinder had exploded. However, concern grew after it was found that the gas cylinder inside the house remained intact and safe. Ansari was the only person inside the house at the time of the incident.
Police said the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear as Ansari suffered serious burns. Upputhara police reached the spot and conducted a preliminary inspection. A relative of Ansari reportedly told police that flames erupted while he was lighting the gas stove. However, police said the explanation does not appear fully convincing.
Following this, forensic experts arrived at the house and collected samples for detailed analysis. Police said the exact cause of the explosion can be confirmed only after forensic test results are received.
