Kanpur:A 16-year-old girl climbed a wireless tower at the Kanpur police commissioner’s office on Tuesday and threatened to jump unless her boyfriend was released from jail, police said.
The incident was linked to the Sachendi police station area. The girl climbed the approximately 30-feet-high tower and shouted that her boyfriend had been wrongfully sent to jail and that she would jump from the top if he was not released.
According to information, the girl’s boyfriend, was sent to jail in Oct 2025 in a Pocso Act case after the girl’s mother alleged that he had eloped with her minor daughter. After finding the girl, police sent the 20-year-old youth to jail. The case has remained in court since then.
On Tuesday, the girl’s boyfriend had a hearing at Kanpur court and the girl also reached there. A dispute broke out between the girl and her mother over their statements, as the girl wanted to give a statement in favour of the youthwhile her mother pressured her to give a statement against him.
After the dispute, the girl left the court and reached the police commissioner’s office, where she climbed the wireless tower installed there. She continued shouting from the tower that her mother had wrongfully got her boyfriend sent to jail.
Police and fire department personnel tried to bring her down, but she refused to listen and threatened to jump if anyone came near her. Police then summoned the youth from the court to the spot. After seeing him below, the girl climbed down on her own and embraced him. Police took both of them inside. The youth was sent back to the court, while the girl was sent to the women’s police station, where questioning began.
Joint police commissioner Vipin Tanda said, “The matter is being investigated. It will also be ascertained how the girl reached the tower and whether anyone instigated her to do so.”
