Dibrugarh: As the year comes to a close and the picnic season reaches its peak, the Jorhat district administration has introduced a special road safety initiative to ensure safe celebrations for revellers across the district.
The campaign, launched in collaboration with the district administration, police and transport department, coincides with the influx of picnic parties heading to scenic riverbanks, forest edges, and other outdoor locations to enjoy the remaining days of this year.
In the past week, joint teams of police officers and transport officials have been visiting popular picnic spots throughout Jorhat district. From the banks of the Brahmaputra river to rural picnic destinations, officials have been engaging with holidaymakers, distributing safety pamphlets, and putting up banners to remind people to stay vigilant on the roads.
Key advisories displayed at these sites include messages such as “Don’t drink and drive,” “Don’t overload vehicles,” “Avoid overspeeding,” and “Don’t carry passengers on goods vehicles.” Picnic-goers are also encouraged to leave picnic locations by 4pm to reduce the risk of accidents that often occur after dusk, according to an official from the district transport department. The advisory also stresses the importance of using headlights and reflectors, particularly during the foggy morning and evening hours typical of this time of year.
Jorhat senior superintendent of police (SSP) Subhrajyoti Borah highlighted that the initiative is a sustained effort throughout the festive period, not just a one-time exercise. “We have observed that excitement during the picnic season sometimes leads to negligence on the roads. This campaign is meant to remind people that celebrations should not come at the cost of safety. The drive will continue till the end of January,” the SSP stated.
District commissioner Jay Shivani appealed to residents and visitors to cooperate with authorities and adhere to the guidelines. “We want everyone to celebrate responsibly. Our goal is not to restrict joy but to ensure that every outing ends happily and safely,” the DC said.
As part of the awareness drive, teams are conducting unannounced visits to monitor compliance and provide on-the-spot guidance, especially to groups traveling long distances or carrying large loads of food and equipment. Roadside banners have been erected along key routes leading to picnic destinations, reminding motorists to “Drive Safe, Reach Home Safe.”
The district transport department has also announced that regular checks on vehicles and drivers are being conducted to ensure adherence to safety norms.
