Shillong: Limison D Sangma of the ruling National People's Party (NPP) has been elected uncontested as the deputy speaker.
Representing the Raksamgre assembly constituency in West Garo Hills, Limison's election follows the resignation of his predecessor, Timothy D Shira, also from NPP, earlier this week.
The election process, overseen by commissioner and secretary of the assembly, Andrew Simons, saw Limison as the sole candidate. His nomination was proposed by Marcuise N Marak, a cabinet minister and Williamnagar MLA, and seconded by Abu Taher Mondal, another cabinet minister and Phulbari MLA.
With Sept 10 as the deadline for filing nominations and Sept 11 for withdrawals, the election was initially scheduled for Sept 12. However, the absence of any opposition nominations led to Sangma's unanimous election.
Speaker Thomas A Sangma is set to formally announce Limison's election on the final day of the ongoing autumn session. Addressing the media, the speaker noted the possibility of revisiting the announcement should any withdrawals occur, though none have been reported thus far.
