This Durga Puja, the 72nd year of celebrations by Baguiati Rail Pukur United Club will unfold around a poignant theme —
“Shabdo” (The Sound). The concept draws attention to the fading sounds of nature and everyday life
Birdsong, once a gentle marker of dawn and dusk, has almost disappeared from city life. The night calls of owls and nocturnal birds too have grown rare. Through this theme, the puja highlights how rapid tree felling and unplanned urban growth have destroyed habitats, driving birds away and muting their voices. It serves as a reminder that humanity’s unchecked expansion is pushing us closer to ecological imbalance, a burden future generations may inherit.
The pandal will feature a towering 20-foot artistic representation of birds alongside striking installations, immersive soundscapes, and mime performances to portray the silent cries of vanishing species. The creative vision is being shaped by artist Somnath Tamli, with the idol sculpted by Debprasad Hazra, lighting designed by Dipankar Dey, and performances by mime artists Shubhendu Mukhopadhyay and Kaushik Biswas. The construction and design team includes Bapi Das, Samiran Jana, Poulami Bose, Faruk Shaikh, and Debayan Banerjee.
Speaking on the theme, a committee member noted that the sounds of nature are not mere background music but the heartbeat of the environment. This year’s puja seeks to awaken awareness, urging society to act before silence replaces the symphony of life.
