Agartala: West Agartala police arrested Youth Congress leader Shahjan Islam on Monday in Joypur, near the India-Bangladesh border, after he had evaded arrest for six months. He was wanted for allegedly making derogatory remarks about chief minister Manik Saha, which police said carried communal overtones.
According to officials, he fled to Bangladesh soon after an FIR was filed against him and returned to Tripura on Sunday night.

Police said Shahjan had been planning to surrender before the court to avoid arrest, but was arrested based on intelligence inputs. He was produced in court with a request for four days of police remand to enable further investigation.
The controversy dates back to June last year, when a BJP Yuva Morcha leader filed an FIR against Shahjan for disparaging comments made during a Facebook Live session targeting CM Saha. Subsequently, Billal Miah, a BJP Minority Morcha leader, lodged another FIR accusing Shahjan of offensive remarks directed at him.
Since then, Shahjan — known for his fiery speeches and vocal leadership — had remained untraceable until his arrest this week.
