Natural for BJP, MGP to come together to form govt: Fadnavis

A day ahead of counting, BJP’s Goa election incharge Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday that it is “natural for BJP and MGP to come together to form the next government, as there are similarities in ideology of both parties”. BJP has asked its MLAs to go to the party headquarters in Panaji at 4pm on Thursday, after counting is over. Fadnavis, who has already held talks with MGP to discuss a post-poll alliance, said he is also in touch with “those who can come with us to form the next government”.

Goa set for counting of votes from 8am

The counting of votes will begin at 8 am in Panaji of 19 constituencies from North Goa and counting of votes of 21 constituencies from South Goa will be held in Margao. In all, there are 301 candidates including independents and 12 political parties in the fray. Over 79% of the electorate exercised their franchise. For the first time, counting for all 40 constituencies in the state will be taken up simultaneously and the results are expected to be declared by noon.

Congress, which lost 10 of its 15 MLAs en masse to BJP in 2019, has been keeping its flock together to prevent poaching. After having made them stay in a North Goa beach resort on Tuesday night, they were shifted to a star hotel in Fatorda on Wednesday evening.

But with many of the constituencies witnessing close fights and even triangular battle, it is anybody’s guess who will emerge the winner, as this election is expected to throw up many surprises. Even the exit polls have given a fractured verdict for Goa, with both BJP and Congress expressing confidence that they would emerge as the single largest party in the 40-member House.

The election is also a testing ground for AAP and TMC, as both political parties are trying gain national recognition by opening its account in Goa. AAP, which could not secure a single seat in the 2017 assembly election, is trying its luck for the second time, while TMC has forged a pre-poll alliance with MGP to contest 39 seats. Both AAP and TMC have aggressively campaigned and announced doles to lure the electorate.
